Problems with WiFi in DXB EKFC Lounge?

So I'm here for a another few hours, after my first trip on EK.

The trip report will be forthcoming, but in the meantime...

It seems the Wi-Fi here either has a massive firewall or problems.

Using the EKFC, my Vonage softphone doesn't work, and I can't access my companies OWA site.

Using the MaxSpot signal, I can do these things.

Of course, neither one wants to let me access my personals site

Anywas, just curious if it's me or not...

David

Hi, it's not you, it's definitely the EK 1st class lounge in Dubai that is the problem. I use an Apple iBook with built in wireless (Airport) and Safari as my browser; it all worked fine in the Cathay lounge in Melbourne (which Emirates passengers use) and fine in the Emirates lounge in Auckland...but I failed dismally in the F lounge in Dubai, both on the way out and then 2 weeks later on the way home.

I seemed to be able to get a good reception from the wider Dubai airport network, which offered a free trial etc. but I didn't bother as they wanted quite a lot of personal information.

The MaxSpot service seems to allow you access without sign-up now. It did 2 weeks ago anyway.

Cheers,
Rick

I have always had it be hit and miss. Sometimes I wasnt sure if it was a firewall problem or some sort of proxy server they where trying to use. At any rate, it is not configured for optimal performance and I gave up on VOIP on the thing and just was happy if I could make a secure connection via VPN or HTTPS to get mail etc. I would never do login to anything non secure on that network.

The F lounge has a firewall that precldes skype as well as the ability to remotely pick up emails from a corporate server. My blackberry worked well but I could not get email remotely.

Gents FYI,

Maxispot uses the unrestricted interent where as the Emirates lounge uses a different system that runs through the normal interenet. IN Dubai VOIP is compelty blocked due to goverement regulations, no Joke. Do a google search Skype & Dubai.

Dxb wi-fi update

The "Maxspot" wifi system in Dubai Airport is now free.

Sadly, you get what you pay for - the blockages, slowdowns, and other dodgy service standards continue to exist.

It wouldn't even let me access this thread (although I could get on FlyerTalk just fine). Apparently the "negative" tone of this message about the UAE is enough to get it blocked.

There seems to be no other alternative at the Dubai airport.

Dubai continues to be a city pretending to be part of the first world.

the internet is filtered just like any other part of dubai or the uae.. vonage doesn't work at all in the uae.

the airport is filtered even more.. but you can get full access if you have a vpn.. which is a must for anyone living here.

I've always used Maxspot at DBX - a couple of years ago it was quite patchy, but more recently it has been fine for me. I have used Skype there without any apparent problem - I had no idea it was banned!!

skype chats will work, but the phone calls usually do not unless you have a vpn.
