How often do golds get op ups?

Just heard from one of my usual travelling companions who flew BNE-SIN the other day .
he is gold with a Blue travelling companion and they had purchaed J and at the gate were told they were getting new BPS.
to their surprise it was an op up to F.
I have heard of a few people getting them on here and am wondering what percentage of flights do golds get upgraded?

I don't think EK releases any official results, but the numer is very, very high. I think this is partly because Silver/Golds don't get much advantage in terms of upgrades compared to non members and Blues (no SWUs, EVIPs, same mileage availability and redemptions etc) so maybe EK tries to compensate by going crazy with opups. Or it could just be that EK yield management sucks

FWIW my grandfather, as a Gold, has been op upped (J-->F) on 25% of all his flights, mostly DXB-BKK,DXB-KHI,DXB-LHR,DXB-ZRH and vv.

Cheers

thankyou for the prompt reply.
I am traveling with my husband syd-bkk next month I am in F he is in J and is gold.
I was wondering if i should use points to upgrade but if there is a good chance that he gets upgraded anyway maybe I shouldnt break into the bank as we are almost at a first syd-dxb
he was gold last year when travelling down bkk-syd and didnt get an op up

I was hoping to find someone in CC to exchange with but that seems like that wont happen
so im in a bit of a dither what to do. I dont want to see him in J for that trip.

any advice?

My aunt had a similar dilemma this summer. She was booked in Y as a Gold, on a full flight and wanted to be opipped to J. She had miles to upgrade, but the problem is that you can't use these miles at check-in - you must do it beforehand. Since she can't stand Y, I suggested using the miles, which she did. On board there were free seats in J despite the flight showing J0C0 days before the flight.

Cheers

Hi,

I have just made Gold but have had 3 op ups in the last 6 months as a silver member. Two from Y to J and most recently from J to F.

The latter flight was SYD-BKK-DXB-CDG in J which I used miles for. The DXB-CDG leg was majorly oversold ( the gate agents were all in a fluster at the situation ) and the computer had already upgraded me to F when I put my boarding card through the machine.

In retrospect Tinkybelle the SYD-BKK leg had quite a few empty seats in J whereas BKK-DXB was full. So I cant say with certainty that an op up from SYD is likely.

The 777-300ER first class was of course a great way to finish a long journey. The bed was much more comfortable when flat than on the A340 although I prefer the privacy on the A340.
It was a shame that the attendant looking after my side of first was so surly. Didnt smile once and looked like she had just lost a million dollars and we were responsible.
I didnt pay a cent to be sitting in First but if I was a paying First passenger I would have been very bothered by that.
And things like just speaking at you when you have your headphones on watching a film knowing full well you cant hear a word being said. Why cant they just be polite? It is easy to let someone know you wish to ask them something and wait till they take their headphones off.
Also when the pre-departure drinks were offered I asked for an apple juice and then saw an interesting drink on her tray which I asked what it was. The answer was " thats not apple juice".

Sorry, thats my rant of the day which I know you didnt ask for! I just needed to get off my chest the fact that even though the first class product is great the service leaves a lot to be desired.

I am silver, soon to be gold, and I have been upgraded twice.

Once at the check-in which was when I was flying to Moscow, y to J.

Also, the second time which was pretty awesome was Dubai to JFK, that was upgraded at the gate, which I was incredibly happy about. Y to J again.

Most inter-gulf flights i find that I rarely get upgraded as there are so many golds and silvers on these flights. If the flight is overbooked, you most likely will get upgraded.

In the last year:

DXB-DUS Y TO J (then they had three class config so was technically in F)
DXB-LHR J TO F
LHR-DXB J TO F
DXB-LCA Y TO J
DXB-DUS Y TO J
LGW-DXB J TO F
LHR-DXB J TO F
DXB-DAM Y TO J (then they had three class config so was technically in F)
JNB-DXB J TO F

(I got my gold card just 6 weeks after skywards was launched and have had it now since they started, i think this is flagged, tlaking to the FA's on one of the flights and they told me I am flagged as a VVIP where as Gold pax are flagged as VP's) i can only think this is the reason!

However, I find GF the best, I seem to be upgraded EVERYTIME I fly in J to F with them, even if they have seats in J open. This is usally on the BKK-MCT ot BKK-BAH flights when they have skychefs. I think it's due to all the food they have on board and it needs eating. I have been UG'd at check-in in BKK most of the time rather than at the boarding gate.

I cam back from BKK the other week to MCT and there was 6 of us in F ALL upgraded from J and 6 empty seats in J..

How lucky?
