Upgrades
Just been upgraded from eco to business flying VIE - DXB.
Received my economy seat as normal at check-in, then upgraded at the entrance to gate. Asked if I was travelling alone (which I was) and if Dubai was my final destination (which it was).
I do most of my travel with OS and LH so only a blue emirates card holder, it appeared however that i had been preselected for the upgrade so i guess blue is enough.

If you are silver member, you also have the chance to be upgraded - its not limited to gold. But oliver2002 is right, there are a lot of status members out there, so theres only little chance. It also depends on the sector of course.

I was upgraded from Economy to Bussiness with a blue members card on a flight from Dubai to Frankfurt back in February after arriving from Brisbane
Maybe they needed the emergency exit seat I catched when checking in in Brisbane. Seemed like they had preselected me as well (I was also travelling alone).
Cheers,
Jog
