Upgrade availability to J and Saver vs Flex

Upgrade availability to J and Saver vs Flex
I'm looking at GLA-DXB-PNH for the end of the month. The flights I am looking at say no upgrades available, and because I don't have any experience with Emirates upgrades I'm not sure if that suggests no upgrades will ever be available for these flights, or if they usually open up later up.
On the back of that, is there any benefit to upgrading from Saver to Flex if upgrades aren't available? The seat benefit doesn't really make up for it -- upgrading to Flex costs more than the cost of seats and the only benefit seems to be how many miles to upgrade.
