New 777 J class
The new 1-2-1 J class on the 777 is set to operate as of 11 August, yet to date there’s been no further information about the design of the seats other than the generic press release: https://www.emirates.com/media-centre/emirates-unveils-first-destinations-to-be-served-with-refurbished-boeing-777/
Presumably they’re likely to be an exact replica of the existing 380 J seats? Otherwise you would have thought that Emirates would have been building up the hype a bit more… |
I would expect +- current A380 C Class seat with more tech and doors
|
Yes, it's odd... I've heard EK intends to make more of a 'Big Bang' about the arrival of the A350 and the return to Edinburgh, but still, to not take advantage of the seemingly-obvious free kick from the new B777 business class seems odd...

Maybe they aren't mentioning the new B777 as it could invite comparisons to the vast bulk of the actually-in-the-air 777 fleet...

Pictures of the first retrofitted B777 have been released:
https://www.emirates.com/media-centr...off-to-geneva/ Effectively a copy of the A380 seats. Will be flown to GVA today as EK 83. |

Are the 777 business seats the same as those on the A380?
Tks |
Looks like some very slight differences (seat controls and power outlets look different, and the “aisle guard” is different for alternating seats is what I can spot) , but essentially the same as the most recent 388 J seat, yes.
|
Seats also look narrow.
|
I like the additional "headrest pillow" in the new business class seat and and the color tone of the cabin but not a game changer or industry leading product. PE looks really nice.
|
I doubt EK will ever have an industry leading J product. The airlines that do have limited or no F. EK has a lot of F seats to fill, and they need clear differentiation in the products to balance out.
But maybe the seat in the A350 will be a bigger evolution. They have referred to that seat as a “next generation” seat, and I don’t think I’ve seen that wording used to describe the retrofit seat. |
Quite a let down but not entirely surprising.
I now suspect that these seats will also be used for the A350… |
If they have c.130 77Ws, but only refurbing 80 77Ws, and there are less than 20 2-class 77Ws, what is happening to the other other 3-class 77Ws?

Long overdue for the 777.

It's almost a kind of special skill to remain so completely tone deaf to the current market expectations on a business class seat, while their regional competitors continue to innovate.
Where did the extra cabin width of the 777 vs. A380 UD go? Did they just make the aisles extra wide? |

We’re about to start a new era called “the A380 J seat is crap”, aren’t we? 😂

The actual seats on the A380 are already too narrow (19.5 inches, which is barely larger than an economy seat). I was very disappointed at this seat indeed; however, EK has an industry leading First Class and PE to compensate for this dated "new" 20-year old design seat. |

I keep reading online. There will be a small bar area to take snacks and food. Can’t see in the pictures where would it be?

Not sure whether this write-up offers any additional info over & above the content of EK’s official media announcement but perhaps worth a look for anyone who hasn’t already seen it ……….

Are the present 777 J seats 2-3-2 angled flat? or fully flat?

Similar to what QR have on their B787 / A350.
|
And you obviously don’t want a real ‘bar’, a place where people gather, stand around and talk, in that position.
It looks more like what they call the ‘social area’ in the F cabin, although that of course is on the other side of the (front) curtain. |
Isn't that what they have in the B772's with 2 class config? I remember flying to MEX and they had such kind of "bar" area. It was much better located between the 2nd doors so you had space to stretch your legs without disturbing anyone

To be perfectly honest, this decision from EK is absolutely mind boggling to me.
It was already baffling enough that they stuck with the incredibly uncompetitive current 2-3-2 layout for so long, but to then announce a major upgrade of J on almost the entire 777 fleet and go with this layout? I mean, that just blows my mind. And then consider doing all of this while QR have been absolutely blowing everyone away with new types of seats, and doors, and all sorts of innovations for the past number of years. Makes no sense to me. |
It makes total sense. EK has a very strong brand, so why bother wasting money on innovating in J when they can fill the planes at a profit anyway?
The EK recipe that they have proven to work is: -consistently good soft product in F -A380 showers and bar -lots of content on the IFE in Y Who cares about J? |
