I checked in online early today and selected a nice aisle seat, obtaining an electronic boarding pass.

Arrived to the airport with ample time, went through security without any issues, then got to the gate well ahead of time, after some shopping.

At the gate, they told me they had switched my seat from aisle to middle seat.

When I asked why, they said because the flight was overbooked, they automatically offloaded online checkin passengers, but because I am Platinum, the system accepted me back, but with another seat (middle seat) as my original one was taken but that time.

Honestly never heard of this explanation - is this a thing now? Does it mean it's better to pass by the checkin desk even if I have a boarding pass?

I'm not happy about the switch to middle seat, but again what can I do. I found the whole thing very strange.

Log a complaint but they will say you were lucky to have been put back on. Seat selection can be changed but they might throw some points or something to you
