As someone once said: if you really want an upgrade, working for it will improve your chances.

That is very much crystal ball gazing stuff as it depends on availability, predicted sale of tickets in the higher cabin and EK's upgrade algorithms (which we don't know). As long as EK expects to sell tickets in that cabin, they wont issue upgrades, auto or otherwise. If I remember correctly, auto upgrade cancels at T-72 hours. And it has not always been super reliable. I have often set upgrade alerts and these have been successful in that I have received an email that upgrades were available. Within the T-72 hour window, phoning the call centre may also work (the EK call centre is in my experience one of the best - if not the best - in the industry).

Called the call centre in Dubai, more out of hope than expectation, thinking Id be told it would be a no-show and Id have to fly FZ that night or wait 24 hours.
Agent called back to say they had spoken to the EK manager on duty, explained the situation to her, and gave me her cell phone, all in ten minutes.
Manager met me before check-in security with BP and all ready, walked me through immigration and second security to make sure i made the flight.
apologies for going off-topic.

Agree 100% re EK call centre. I remember being stuck in particularly bad traffic in Entebbe I think it was, on the way to the airport. Id already done OLCI, and no checked baggage, but was really worried about not making it to gate in time.

Off topic, yes. My apologies, I did want to respond to IntrepidAfrican's message.
And yes, I totally agree about the EK call centre. Excellent service and always there to do whatever they can.
Also agree that the more you put into making an upgrade happen, the more likely you are to get it. My experience in the past has been that if you sit back and expect it to happen, chances are that it won't.
