You need availability and enough miles. Miles required can be seen when booking (varies depending on type of ticket booked) or by using the mileage calculator on the website. Availability can be checked on ExpertFlyer.
If you're going further than Dubai it's a bit more complex as married segment availability is required.
The process itself is simple - just a few mouse clicks.

I think it can be checked on the EK website then by looking for First Rewards, as they come out of the same bucket (Z) as upgrades? I didn't suggest this initially as I'm not 100% sure, only familiar with the D upgrades/rewards in Business Class.
