EK pax loading

Does anyone know how Emirates assigns seats at check-in? For online check-in, if you're not gold or platinum, can you select "preferred" seats for free? For airport check-in, if you haven't assigned a seat yet, and you don't specifically ask for one, is there a procedure to follow? Will EK only allow non status pac's to be seated in preferred rows when the other rows are full?

They don't get filled up by Saver people who book months in advance.
