Emirates or Qatar

I am looking to fly for the first time using Emirates or Qatar to Bangkok from London in Y and was wondering who is the better airline to fly including the connection etc.

They are pretty similar if on the A380. Avoid Qatar if the flight is a B787 - it's supposed to be grim in Y.

If you fly EK you need to pay for seat assignment unless on a Flex or above fare, or free at OLCI. I don't know what QR seating policy is these days. However EK fly mostly 2-class A380s to BKK where there is a Y cabin on the upper deck, if you are able to snag a seat there, that is probably the best long haul Y experience in the world, especially in the window seats

I would take Qatar if on A380 or A350, otherwise I would take EK. If in Business, it would be QR 100% of the time.

Only if on the newer QR hard product. If it's an a320 recliner vs. EK 777, I'd take EK every time.

That’s the problem with QR. You’re never guaranteed a specific type of aircraft on the whole therefore there can be major differences in the product you will get. At least with EK you know you will either be on a 777 (200-LR or 300-ER) or A380 with fairly consistent seating on each type.

Its grim. Caused me months of neck & back pain which put a big dent in my bank balance in physio costs which in hindsight would have been cheaper to pay a fare difference upgrade to J class.

I'm yet to find any airline which has a comfortable Y on the 787.

If the airlines had kept to the intended marketing specs from Boeing and fitted 8 across, it could have been one off the most comfortable rides in Y.

Saw a thread on here (FT) earlier today about QR vs JAL and reference to JAL having 8 across
