Paid tier status upgrade Gold and Silver

A friend of mine who has Silver status commented last night to my wife that he received an email from EK offering to make him up to Gold for $800.

Unfortunately I was not there so I don't have all the details. Apparently he's not alone in receiving this offer. Anyone got anymore news on this?

Yikes. It took me nearly A$10,000 worth of flying to get it.

This is what infuriated me. And also got me thinking is it a sign that they could be taking the Business Class Lounge at DXB to "Gold Only"?

Perhaps he's 5k miles or so short and hence the offer?

Again, he may be just 5k miles short. Can OP report how many tier miles the member has and/or how many projected tier miles with upcoming bookinks?

Agreed - whilst not unknown amongst loyalty programmes, does smack of desperation...

That said if you don't fly much, maybe EK has bought future business at a profit!

Besides a 25% bump in Skywards miles...does Gold really get you anything else?

Not that I've received this offer, but I would have a hard time pulling the trigger to bump up to Gold.

Lounge access worldwide, which is helpful, guaranteed seat in Y on any flight >48hrs away.

I think it makes sense for a profit-oriented business to upsell someone who has almost achieved Gold or might achieve Gold. I.e. Silvers with >40k and <45k tier miles. It's money for jam, and the cost of flying the miles to get gold is likely in the region of 800USD.

I've posted it before but Gold costs me about 5000-6000USD a year in Y fares

I received this mail in May. I know another friend who is also Silver who received it - both of us are based in DXB, both have 35k+ tier miles.
