I can report that the auto upgrade function works quite well for me. Example: was flying 2 weeks ago HAM-DXB-SIN-DXB-HAM, booked approx. 3 months in advance in J and activated auto upgrade for all flights. Segment 1 was confirmed almost immedietaly after booking, Segment 2 approx. 10 weeks before scheduled departure and Segment 3 3 days before. Only on DXB-HAM I was in J.
Did you manage (or even try) to ‘marry’ the upgrades of the first two segments and therefore ‘pay’ fewer miles then would be the case with two separate upgrade transactions? |

Did I miss something? Never heard of such a thing. How does this work practically?

Miles to upgrade A-B plus Miles to upgrade B-C is more than miles to upgrade A-C in one transaction. I think thijsseh was asking did you pay the higher or lower mileage.
If one upgrades the two sectors separately via Manage My Booking (because at the time of the upgrade of one section, no upgrade was available for the other one but it subsequently became available), one can contact the call centre and they will then ‘combine ‘ the two upgrades into a single one which costs fewer miles. I (and with me several others) am curious to know if such a ‘combination of two upgrades’ is also possible with the ‘auto upgrade’ feature. I am 99.999% certain that this would not automatically happen (though I am always willing to be surprised, hence the 0,001%). But will the call centre be able to perform the same act of combining and refunding sone of the miles after two ‘auto upgrades’? |
I was told over the phone (so believe what you will) that using Auto Upgrade will not allow for the combined miles rate as Auto Upgrade does not 'release' the other legs of travel but rather processes the miles upgrade for that specific leg separately. I've lost 30k miles to Auto Upgrade needlessly. If you're diligent enough, just keep checking EF/MMB as Auto is for lazy people AND it is not instant as soon as there is availability. There is definitely a delay.
I have had Auto Upgrade in place for Z, I called and they processed the upgrade after seeing availability on EF, even though Auto Upgrade hadn't done its thing. I hate to be a tin foil hat wearer, but I reckon there might be priority given to I/O Plat with Auto Upgrade on over say, a silver or low gold. |

Thanks, I did not know about the possibility to combine, so I didnt try and "paid" the higher miles fee. I was just happy to get the 3 miles upgrades. Please don't get me wrong, it shall not sound arrogant, but I have so many miles, and using them for upgrades is the only reasonable way to spend them in my opinion. So I was happy to get rid of some and did not care too much how many it were...

HI, I have set auto upgrades for 2 forthcoming flights but after reading on here , I am a bit dubious about how reliable the system is and should I just keep trying via call center.
Does anyone have access to seat J class seat availability on EK387 HKG-DXB and EK025 DXB-GLA both on Saturday 21st April. Its a Economy Flex + ticket I am trying to upgrade with Skywards miles thanks |

You can see the availability yourself on the same page that you requested auto-upgrade. The issue is occasional delay in the auto upgrade processing, there has not been any report that the EK miles upgrade page doesn't display availability when there is.

Upgrade requests
Requested to be upgraded via website on recent flights, asked for auto upgrades. Not only was I not upgraded when seats were available but was never even notified by email. This ended up with me having to obtain my seats via web chat as I was travelling in a remote area with no cell service. I got my upgrades however ended up having to transfer another 62000 miles from my Amex account in spite of my insistence I had sufficient miles in my account. Needless to say the additional miles were not needed.
Has anyone else experienced failure to be notified of an available upgrade when you have requested to be notified or not getting automatically upgraded when seats became available in spite of requesting 'auto upgrade' and having sufficient miles in your account. |
