Now that EY has pulled out of LCA, I am looking at flying Emirates to Athens from LCA and then Etihad to AUH continuing on to JFK. You may be asking why - because it is cheaper (at least in Business) and I can use the chauffeur in Cyprus.
Anyway, wondering if Emirates interlines bags with etihad or do i have to claim my bags in ATH and lug them to recheck them with Emirates on the return? Outbound is no big deal because I will only have 1 light checked bag.

According to the EK website, yes, they have an interline agreement with EY.
No idea how it works in practice, or if it's at the whim of the check in agent.

Interlining is intended only for customers travelling on a single ticket involving both of those airlines.
You should expect to have your request to have your bag checked through declined.
If they do agree to check your bag through, be sure to show the baggage receipt to the next airline at ATH; they are not expecting any baggage for you, as you have not checked the bag in directly with them; and if you do not explicitly bring the bag to their attention by showing them the baggage receipt, there is a very good chance that your bag will not be loaded and go missing.
