Africa’s economic woes weigh on Emirates network: Tim Clark

Airline mulls frequency cuts, dropping routes on the continent

http://gulfnews.com/business/aviatio...lark-1.1914526

A strong dollar and weaker currencies including in Australia, Africa, India and the United Kingdom is adding pressure on Emirates in what already is a “tough year,” Clark said.

Globally, demand for air travel has softened this year as passengers increasingly factor in security to their travel plans after a number of high profile terror attacks in Europe and Turkey.

Nigeria alone owed Emirates $680 million as of early September, Clark has said previously, with carriers including United Airlines and Spain’s Iberia having already halted flights.

It's a 2-month adjustment. EK053/054 will go back to A380 on 01DEC.

How could it not? Departing FLL at 2020, the rest of the world, bar the Americas, is already well into the next day...

I thumbsucked 8pm FLL local = ~midnight DXB + 9-10 hours = 10am. Obviously I mixed up the East Coast time difference to where i live (5 hours) with the time difference to DXB which is in fact a bit more, plus the flight is probably more than 10h.

Bit heavy on the acronyms there.
when dealing with airline routes, S and W are standard abbreviations for the northern summer and northern winter seasons.

IATA defines that the northern summer scheduling season begins on the date of Daylight Saving Time (DST) introduction in European Union countries, which currently always takes place on the last Sunday in March. The northern winter scheduling season commences on the date Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends in European Union countries, which currently always takes place on the last Sunday in October.

Most (all?) airports allocate slots for a season; hence most (all?) airports largely observe these two "seasons", though of course there can be variations in service within either of these seasons, and/or seasonal services may not endure for the totality of any of these two seasons.

It kind of helps everyone if everyone sticks to the same general timetable. Imagine the headaches of trying to coordinate all schedules and slots if every single airport was working to their own timetable!!!

Hence: W16 ("winter" 2016/7, namely Sunday 30 October 2016 to Saturday 25 March 2017); S17 ("summer" 2017, namely Sunday 26 March 2017 to Saturday 28 October 2017).

IATA calendar of coordination activities

Athens

Athens increase from 12 to 14 weekly flights from May'17. Both flights direct. EK103/4 & EK105/6.

Anyone have any idea if Larnaca will get its own dedicated flight, as the EK107/8 won't be operating as LCA/ATH from May'17

don't forget that LCA also receives EK109/110, a twice a week service that goes on to MLA, with MLA being served 5 times a week by EK749, a triangular service that also surves TUN.

If African routes are being rationalised/dropped, perhaps MLA/LCA will be paired up at the expense of TUN for these additional 5 weekly services.

Don't expect TUN to be dropped anytime soon.

B77L
