We've all been there, wondering how on earth Emirates ( & other airlines) allow their own cabin baggage rules to be flouted. I've seen some bags so large & heavy that the passengers needed the FA to put them in the overhead locker. What's your experience? I'm sure my carry on will be within the guidelines but it won't half annoy me if I see any oversized bags.

Just accept that other people might flout the rules and don't let it annoy you and you'll have a much, much more pleasant travelling experience - it is inevitable that oversize and heavy bags will find their ways into cabins, given EKs global network...

Take advantage of EK status and board as early as possible to secure overhead space if in Y.

I checked in in Dubai two weeks ago for afternoon flight to Manchester.with a colleague. We were overweight with luggage as we had 10 sets of academic dress (robes, hats etc) we were transporting as well as our own luggage. The check in agent suggested we carried one 14kg bag as cabin baggage. We declined and checked the bag. Huge difference from Manchester where if you are half a kg over or have a laptop bag as well as a carry.on they make you put it in hold.

Surviving check in at man is a good test for the security to follow....

I've managed to avoid Manchester for the last 2 years for non EK flights . The security check is easily the worst among all UK airports.In fact it is so bad that it makes the security check at DEL and most other Indian airports look good!!

I now go to liverpool for my flybe and easyjet flights and travel from there.

At DXB a few weeks ago they were weighing cabin bags before the security check and with limit of 7kg permitting max of 10kg. My bags were 12kg (but well within size limits), and the guy said I must check it as security would turn me away (not that EK would have an issue!). I said sure and walked towards check-in then took a different entrance to security where the guy weighing bags was pre-occupied with someone else's overweight cabin baggage.

In HYD I've found a few times that they insist on the 1 piece of cabin baggage rule (I have a roller and a small laptop bag), but always managed to talk my way past it so far.

Agree with ET, status and board early is the key, especially on packed (specifically India) flights.

Also noticed especially on India flights they often force gate-checking of oversize bags, but again I've always slipped past, probably as my bag is smaller than most of the other cabin bags (the fabric ones with extra external pockets just appear so much larger than my simple black hard shell).

Everything is fine on EK compared to Chinese domestic flights (and I do not mean PVG/SHA etc ), crazy what I've seen there (no offence to Chinese people!)

I've only experienced full checks ex Japan (kg's written down on the EK tag on the cabin luggage and double checked at the gate), however the flights were completly full.

Well my outbound flight is from Man so I guess I'll have to run the gauntlet. We will probably check in online so just use bag drop. Are they likely to be strict, or should we expect it to be stricter at security? It's correct that Liverpool is more tolerant than Manchester. Recently flew from there and they definitely were not enforcing the bag size rule. That was with Squesyjet. We will both have a wheeled bag but I will also have a handbag. We're in J.

In j you should be ok. Don't take the piss with the weight because they do sometimes weigh them.

Security don't care about weight just any liquid at all not in plastic will be a huge issue.

The weight should be OK but I was a bit bothered about the allowed handbag size. Then I checked & they allow a 22in handbag. Now who the flip has a 22in handbag. That's nearly 2 ft long!!!!

Yes. Japanese staff in Japan are complying by the rules whatever the airline, be it baggage weight, upgrade rules or anything. That's the pain side of Japanese quality

An airline with bizarre rule is AF. If the checkin baggage is too heavy, they require that you take the overweight in cabin. Happened to me couple of times, and they even gave me a big plastic bag each time ... Still can't understand the logic.

better to take it into the cabin, most of the time your checked baggage is in BKK and you in YYZ with AF
