I've been op'd up from a J ticket ( this was a miles upgrade from Y) 3 times so far.
Its always been ex DXB and never from outstations unlike regular op ups.

My flex plus Y is now a flex plus J showing on my ticket. Interestingly my one upgrade to F to MAN next week in a F saver as are my purchased F seats.
When I did my double it was treated as a flex and a flex so 2 x 25k miles...

I just looked at the last time I did it, which was March, and I was deducted Y FP miles to J, then J Flex to F, so it seems the automatic precalculating now preserves the fare class, which is good to know!
Another reason to buy Flex tickets!

I stand corrected - I previously had an issue where I did an upgrade and it turned into a saver, although that was some time ago (using the precalculated miles method on the manifest).

Yes - lounge and check-in said it was totally full in J so I had to do it on board: the situation was, I was travelling in Y, and wanted to upgrade one of my party who was in J, so I would then take the J seat and she would take the F seat. Instead of two separate transactions, the purser basically upgraded me to F and then we swapped seats, but it appeared on my Skywards statement as 1 upgrade Y-J flex of 30000 and 1 J-F flex of 39000 (LGW-DXB). Other traveller was on a separate PNR.

Yes, I got on board and mentioned to the SFS I wanted to do some onboard upgrades if possible - he brought the purser down from F and we had a chat at the door (well, nearby, pax need to get on!) whilst my travelling companions sat in their assigned J seats. It was all processed before doors closed - still needed to present my passport and physical card.

On a seriouse note: No chance at check in/lounge imo, especially ex DXB. Just try to be nice from the beggining, talk with him/her about how happy you are with EK however you are most of the time unable to use your miles because there is never Z inventory. Sometimes it worked.
(I assume you have already upgraded the ticket and it is not a reward ticket (because of the flex plus thing))

tell the purser that you are working for M&C and you have to try the DP on board

At DXB you're at the mercy of departure control who seem to be some sort of monolithic entity who understandably do things by the book (and have revenue management breathing down their necks). At outstations all the full-time staff know each other and more amenable to helping out someone asking nicely at the desk to use miles etc.
