The seats are at a slight angle so lie flat but not quite 180 degrees.
I find them comfortable as long as you don't have a middle seat. The service is usually very good on the 777 due to only 42 pax as against 76 on the a380 where things can be slower.
Is it worth it? That's a question that involves a lot of factors personal to you including cost etc etc.

The J seats on a 777 are nice. Though , if traveling with a companion, you can't be as close to him/ her as on the E/F seats on a 380. Yes, the are lie flats, not fully flats as on a 380.

Only you can tell whether it is worth it because only you know what else you would do with that money. For me the question doesn't arise because I don't have the sort of income that can afford it but for many other people the extra is pocket change. When I have been upgraded (either opup or using miles) it has been very good. On some routes with an A340 I would say it isn't worth it as the seat reclines a bit more and a bit more leg room but that is it (I got upgraded DXM SGN and the man sat next to me was really unimpressed for what he had paid and I had to agree)
