Using miles HKG-MAN

Apologies if this is in the wrong place, I can't put it in the Skywards question sticky.

I have miles expiring in June 2015 and just booked a return flight MAN-HKG and wanted to use miles to upgrade on the return on 18th April.

I booked a Flex Y ticket, which cost about Ł70 more than a Saver, but meant I could get the upgrade for about 50k miles (rather than 68k). When I came to do the upgrade, the system tells me no upgrades are currently available (either leg), try later.

I could try every day, but is there any way to find out if upgrades will at some point be allowed, or might I have to try at the airport? It would be annoying if I paid more than necessary for my Y ticket, and couldn't get an upgrade.

A subscription to Expert Flyer will allow you to set up an alert which will notify you if an upgrade seat becomes available.

If nothing comes up (they often do a few days out), then yes, the airport is an option, or even on board if you have any status with Skywards.

Should also mention that at the airport, or on board, you'll only be able to do one segment at a time, and it'll cost you more miles overall.

I've just managed to upgrade our 2 J tickets on a DXB-LHR flight in early May to F, I'm guessing that was pretty lucky on that route?...

Yes and no !

Upgrade inventory overall is becoming ever more difficult to find, but J-F is (for the most part...) easier than Y-J - which is what the OP is looking for.

Many J cabins are going out 100% full these days (varies by sector of course) and even when there looks to be space a couple of weeks out, there can be many op-ups to status pax booked in Y, hence the empty seats being filled at the last minute.

It's a jungle out there ......

May is the quietest time to travel and j to f is miles easier than y to j
