I think you won a little lottery here. With two flights out of AMS, and status heavy on this popular A380 flight, its kind of rare. Atleast I haven't heard it for a long while with my colleagues/friends who take this flight regularly. I always get the paid e-upgrade before the flight, and I ignore it. I was never been lucky at Gate.

Walked up to J check-in (as EK Silver) and they asked if I'd be happy to be bumped to the evening flight for a complimentary upgrade. Said yes so I got sent to the ticket counter where the lady in charge informed me that they'd actually had a couple of cancellations so they were no longer overbooked, so tough luck. Went back to the check-in desk to drop luggage and re-print boarding passes, and magically a J boarding pass appears (for my original flight). No MAN lounge access but I have a Priority Pass so no bother there. ^
