Connecting in KUL
We are flying KUL-DXB in late March in F and haven't decided where we will be connecting FROM yet. The flight departs KUL at 7:20pm, wherever we are coming from will be somewhere else in SE Asia and it will be an international connection.
The MCT says 1 hour for International to International. Does this apply if I'm flying into KLIA2 on a budget carrier?
Is KUL like SIN where you are safe as long as you are within the MCT or are there other factors I need to consider when connecting to EK?

If you are on 2 separate bookings then it is not a connection and it is up to you to ensure that you allow enough time to collect baggage from 1st flight and to get to the Emirates check in desk in time for the Emirates flight
1 hour would not be nearly enough time for this
If you have a single ticketed itinerary from XXX-KUL-DXB , then you are protected

No way you will make it from KLIA2 to KLIA in 1 hour. Just impossible.
KLIA2 is a totally different building. There is no sterile transit from KLIA2 -> KLIA. Also KLIA 2 is huge, and if you park at one of the far gates, you need 20mins to walk to immigration. Then clear immigration, collect bags, take the train (5min ride), 20min frequency, re-check in.
Without baggage, I would attempt it only if I have a minimum 2.5hrs. Any delay would make it challenging

I'd be looking at 3 hours minimum for separate tickets.

It needs only a small delay before you will be arriving late at the Emirates gate such that you may well be refused boarding and end up having to pay penalties as a no show
If you are oin a flexible ticket with no penalty for no show and if you are denied boarding, then you are happy to take the next EK service to DXB, then fine
If you are on any other ticket, leaving less than 2-3 hours at least is too short
If you are on a through single ticketed itinerary, then as lon as it is a valid connection then fine

Some travel insurance will not cover you for a missed connection if you do not have a minimum of 4 hours between your flights (regardless whether the ticket is one or separate). This would be around the time I would leave to make sure you make the flight if you are on separate tickets.

No, and wouldn't recommend doing it unless you're expecting to be denied boarding. MCT is a term used for flights on the same booking, it has NO RELEVANCE to separate tickets.
