Redeeming miles on AS

Redeeming miles on AS
A friend of mine has around 80K EK miles (40K each in her and her husband's account) expiring in Sept and were thinking of redeeming them on AS for the SJC-HNL flight (around end of March). I have read that the procedure to redeem EK miles on AS (or most partners) is a nightmare and on top of that availability is almost non-existent.
Wanted to see if anyone has been able to do so recently and also if anyone knows how many miles are needed for the SJC-HNL flight (either one-way or return).
Any other suggestions for a worthwhile use of these expiring miles? They are based in SF-Bay Area.
