Flights or no flights?

A colleague is trying to book flights from Qatar to the UK at Christmas: DOH / DXB / BHX and return.

On the EK website, the only availability has a long layover, around 11 hours. However on Travelpack.com, there is availability showing for a nice 2 hour connection in DXB.

My colleague called Emirates who confirmed that they could only book the long connection.

What's the perceived wisdom here? Do you think that if she booked the Travelpack flights with the short connection, that she would receive a change notification in due course telling her that the short connection was no longer available.

Any advice appreciated

Does the colleague have gold or plat status to be able to get a preferential seat?

It could either be phantom availability (some booking engines rely on cached information rather than real time) or actual availability due to different point of sale -POS.
