Hold bag interferred with?

Hi

I flew BKK-DXB-LHR on the 1st Jan, one bag checked into the hold with Emirates at BKK.

When I arrived home I unlocked my bag and found some additional items had been placed inside my bag since I checked it in at BKK. Nothing had been removed. The bag is a soft sports bag secured with small padlock on the zip fastening. I was very pleased that I was not stopped at Customs!

The additional items were a rain coat, a 2013 diary and some paperwork.
I contacted the owner of the diary and they informed me that they had flown BKK-DXB-MAN on the same day and their bag had broken open during the journey. Items have been returned to owner.

I am curious if anyone else has had a similar experience?

Other than the above it was my first flight with EK in J on the 380, great flight, price, crew and service.

While this seems like a harmless incident, I'd suggest you take this up with EK hierarchy if you haven't already.

Lets take the example to an extreme, what if the bag which had spilled its contents had contained an innocent looking item which actually contained illegal drugs, it mistakenly gets placed in your bag, and then at your destination you get stopped by customs and searched........ I would like to see you talk your way out of that one. ".....But officer, I have never seen that before in my life"

That was my first thought when I opened the bag.

Although baggage handling is not done by EK, rather by airport employees/contractors, EK may have better contacts to get the message across that this is unacceptable.

If they will do so is another matter, but I can't see that complaining to BKK or DXB airport management will yield much joy either.

And then lets imagine if the OP was flying to, instead of from BKK...

Goodbye life.

It really could be a nightmare scenario. And not far-fetched at all. Drugs could be intentionally placed into your suitcase and the cops at the destination tipped off - as a decoy to distract attention while another mule sails through undetected. (This ploy has evidently been used - but it was another, dispensable mule who was sacrificed rather than an innocent pax.)

More and more I refuse to travel with bags that have moveable zips. Or I have them plastic-wrapped. (And to think I used to despise those once-a-decade flyers who had their luggage wrapped in plastic. How are the mighty humbled!)

BTW the problem of luggage tampering is rife at JNB. Don't even think about checking vulnerable luggage from there.
