Never done that before
I recently flew Rome-Dubai with an Italian friend on a 777, with a FCO-DXB-CMB-SIN itinerary in Y class on a cheap non-refundable ticket. My friend and I were really looked after by the great cabin crew and so I was quite tired on arrival at DXB (where the connection time was only 2 hours).
Anyway, I went into the lounge and fell asleep and slept through my flight departure and did not wake up for a further 3 hours. So, what to do? Well, I made a quick decision to spend 35,000 miles on a UA award in business class to Singapore. I didnt bother to discuss the matter with EK.
Was there a better option?

Option 1 - Since you were in DXB airport - talk to EK staff and see if there is any way they would rebook you free of charge.
Option 2 - check any taxes you could have paid to be rebooked by EK
option 3 - after checking #1 and #2 and booking your award flight, check with EK what happened to your return ticket; in some cases that will be cancelled.

No show fee perhaps now?
Check the terms of the ticket. If its a return it may well be cancelled as a no show.

I don't understand how you got a business class seat for 35k when the minimum needed is 50k? Did you book on SQ?
35k could get you to CMB, so am assuming you booked DXB-SIN-CMB for 35k and did not show up for the second flight.
