Married Segment for Upgrades

I want to fly JFK-DXB-MED and u/g JFK-DXB from Y to J with miles. EF shows

Now my question is, is JFK-DXB showing no seats in D class because the connection [DXB-MED] has no seats in D so the whole trip is showing as D0 or will I actually not be able to upgrade JFK-DXB if I am holding a ticket for Option 2?

I had a previous booking JFK-DXB-MCT where DXB-MCT had seats in D when searching segment by segment but not JFK-DXB but both segments were greyed out for upgrades on MMB.

If I buy a ticket [currently on hold] for Option 2, will I be able to upgrade JFK-DXB? Will i have to call EK?

Hope this isn't too confusing!

Yes you will able to upgrade the legs seperately. EF will show you married segment availability if you search in that manner eg JFK-MED or SFO-BOM but if you select the legs to DXB you will get the actual award availability which can be utilised.
