Need Counsel: Best Program to Use on Emirates?

I'm flying one way business class from JFK to DXB to MAA in early October. I'm thrilled to take the A380, but looking for counsel on what miles program to use.

I have 0 Skywards and don't know when I'll fly Emirates again. I'm a Delta Platinum, but there is no way to get to Chennai from outside India on a Skyteam Ccrrier.

Since you all know the program, I thought you might have some recommendations. Should I earn Skywards or one of the partner airlines?

STLSpidey, I'm not sure if we let Delta people post here. But then again we let BA people in from time to time, so why not I'm kidding.

Seriously, welcome to FT and the EK forum. You should join the Dark Side. EK is currently on world domination plans and the recent EK/QF announcement, plus the pending EK/AA partnership will perhaps provide you with a lot more earn/burn options that you thought.

I flew Delta once...still getting over the experience

If you wanted to maximize skymiles you could do JFK-ATL-DXB-MAA with ATL-DXB on Delta. I mean I wouldn't recommend it but you do have some options. I have seen tickets on OTAs (atleast in Y) so I would assume you could check bags through. You could also fly to BLR with AirFrance which is pretty close to MAA and take a short one hr flight/5-6 hr train to MAA.

Otherwise credit to Alaska. You'll get 125% Miles(which is bad for a premium cabin but better than nothing). You could also status match with Alaska (note its a onetime per lifetime thing so don't do it if you want to get Alaska status the easy way) and get a 100% RDM miles bonus. You'll get MVP-G status for your Delta Plat without a status challenge. You could redeem Alaska for AA, DL and whole bunch of Skyteam Oneworld partners. Emirates redemptions is scheduled for late 2012 but it looks it might take some time.
