Interestingly, as of today, I can do a through booking for a return LHR to HVB via DXB and BNE on the EK website. The price quoted in first is £5866.79. Still a little more expensive than booking separately but much closer.
Perhaps these code-share booking issues are getting sorted.
All I need now is an introduction of an Emirates Visit Australia Pass.
