Fuel Surcharge

It will be effective beginning May 21 here in Hong Kong. This is after they raised all prices by 10% on March 1. Do they think the EK brand warrants passengers to pay such a premium ? I don't think so. Sample fuel surcharges from Hong Kong, all in HKD.

One-way Fuel Surcharge ex - Hong Kong in Y
Currency: HKD
BKK 253
DXB 1164
Middle East 1504
Africa 1664
Europe 1834
Americas 2124

Now flying nonstop from Hong Kong to London on CX or BA or VS sounds like a good deal. For those who want to fly through Middle East on a cheaper fare, we would all be happy taking QR or TK.

Is it kicking in on different dates around the world ?

Maybe it's just me, but I priced a HKG-LHR-HKG out on 01 Jun and return on 8 Jun and here is what I got.

1. EK - HKG$8279 (taxes $1579), all flights on the A380, Saver Fare, upgradeable
2. CX - HKG$9893 (taxes $3903), direct on 744, no Asia Miles, not upgradeable
3. BA - HKG$10,893 (taxes $3903), direct on 744/777, not sure re Avios or upgradeability

And when I priced the same HKG-LHR-HKG flight exactly a month later (ie 01 Jul - 08 Jul) the fare went to HKG$9000 plus taxes remained exactly the same at $1579), so total of $10,579, which is still cheaper than BA. I would have expected the fare to increase due to the Olympics.

I don't think EK are going to be the only ones who will be reviewing prices and taxes (including fuel surcharges over the European Summer) do you?

I think the fuel surcharge is a function of the ticketing date, not the departure date. So for the HK market, it kicks in when you ticket beginning May 21.
