Hitting silver status during route

Hi

My Mum is flying PER-DXB-MAN tomorrow, on a through ticket

She will accrue enough miles on the PER-DXB leg to have silver status. Will she be allowed into the lounge in Dubai; not sure how she could prove her status?

There are actually Skywards folks within the T3 Business Lounge. Have your Mum go there and they should be able to update her status immediately.

If the front desk wont let her in, there is a side door - further along the corridor and she can walk down there. All she needs to say is that she wants to see the Skywards folks and not enter the lounge.

They're actually about 4 small round tables, staffed by EK folks with small Skywards signs on each table.

A friend recently flew with me from JFK to DXB and that flight made him Gold. He simply went to the Skywards desk and they updated his status immediately. He then got op-upped to J for his connecting flight to BKK (so he was a happy camper).

Your mum could also try having her status updated at the T1 lounge opp G122 - but I'm not sure. Tell her to persist with either lounge, especially if she has a long layover.

Let us know how she gets on or if you need any further help.

Remember, if she goes to the Skywards desk within the T3 Business lounge and they update her status, she will have to technically walk back to use the lounge for Silvers, opp Gate 122.

Technically though, unless those are separate tickets, she would have not earned any miles on PER-DXB. Miles would only be awarded after completing PER-DXB-MAN, and status would not be applicable at Dubai.

Having said that, it's worth trying on the basis that she is making Silver at the end of that trip.

I keep meaning to ask - when did they change this? From my miles earning, it seemed that if you flew with a transit only it would be a single award, but if you had a stopover you'd get it as two flights.

For example in summer last year, I flew Saudi-Dubai-Asia with a transit (although I did leave the airport, it was <24 hours) and got the usual Middle East - East Asia miles, but then had a stay of a few days in Dubai on the way back and got both East Asia - Dubai and Dubai - Middle East miles.

That doesn't seem to happen now, though.

That would have been a system error, of which there are many. This change took place when the new Skywards scheme was introduced.

Stopover or transit doesn't make a difference. I had a 2 month stop over in Dubai last year and only got the miles when I flew onward to CDG.

You should be fine, I did this before once without much problems. I prefer the lounge at Gate 122 for that, a bit quieter and the EK people wouldn't be in so much stress there. Helps your chances.

I had the same experience. Transit flight into DXB moved me to Silver, went to the Gate 122 lounge and they let me in (early 2010).

You will be able to access the BKK lounge if you're flying in J or F.
