EK Status Matches:

If you have anything to do with US airline FFP's, then you will be familiar with the term "status-matching".

In essence, it's where you are fast tracked to the mid-tier elite level as a result of your existing status with another carrier.

Some US based airlines, such as US Air, even allow you to buy status.

Most airlines will not status match a person to their top tier - but there are always exceptions to the rule and there is anecdotal evidence on this forum where Skywards members have been comped straight to Gold.

In many cases, this is done by EK for strategic purposes. EK may be wanting to win a corporate client and an enthusiastic sales person may offer Gold status to the senior executives within the company if they transfer their travel to EK.

You will hear fewer stories of individuals being comped to Gold within Skywards - but nothing is impossible.

How to go about requesting a status match?

1. Print or make an electronic copy of your latest FFP account (ie EY/SQ)
2. Write/fax Skywards and commit to EK that you will (or could) transfer your travel to them if they provided you with Silver or Gold status
3. Outline clearly your anticipated spend in the next fiscal year and what cabin you normally travel in.
4. If you have booked upcoming travel on EK, provide the locator so they can reference the itinerary.

Skywards are unpredictable at best, so another strategy is to send a copy of the request to your local EK office. If you have a relationship with them, sometimes a note from the station manager/general manager may help.
