Miles shortage question
I'm trying to book a US-DXB reward ticket to my kid and have to use the service center assistance. There is a shortage of 5000 miles. I've also exceeded the purchase limit of 25000 miles for 2010. Do I have any other options than to wait until January 2011?
Thanks

Book online and you get 10% off the miles required booking through the service center.
Find someone who has the miles at present and then return the favor next year.
If you've purchased 25k miles, there's hardly any value in redeeming them for a Y ticket! Use the miles to upgrade instead.
If you're currently looking at a Flex ticket, look for a Saver.
If you're flying out of LAX/SFO/IAH, try JFK as it is cheaper.

Can I ask for when you are trying to redeem said ticket? Inventory might open up at a later date, but there's no guarantees, so depends on how flexible the kid's plans are. Also, what is the origin point of the ticket? Redemptions out of JFK are cheaper (125k vs 142k) but then you're quite short of mileage.
To be quite honest though, and this is something I'm sure everyone on this forum will agree with, 125k miles on JFK-DXB is a HUGE waste of miles. You could upgrade both legs of the journey for that much if you don't mind paying circa $1700 for the economy fare.

Make sure that you only book flights where there is upgrade possibility at the time of booking to avoid dissappoointment.

june 2011 is far off... suggest you as other have, buy econ ticket then upgrade, you still have time to use your miles for reward, so as time gets closer you can look out for rewards availability. if you cant find an upgrade reward on your initial booking, you can change the dates for ones that have. Of course there might also be a change ticket/reissuing fee.

Yes, well the Skywards people aren't going to say save your miles till later because we've blocked all inventory right now and won't open it up till much later. June is a peak period, so expect availability to be difficult, but keep looking for flights with D class availability, and the moment you have it, book the tickets and upgrade. I think change fees ex-US are quite high, so you don't want to get stuck with them.
