ElAl hopes to gain 50% of the TLV-US flight market

It was announced today , that ElAl will lease a Boeing MD-11, a Boeing 747-300, will reuse a freight 747-200, and will increase the use of the 747-400 by 50% in order to increase the capacity of the TLV-US(JFK,EWR,ORD,LAX) flights and get a hoped 50% of the market. This is due to the increasing competition in the market (TWA,Continental with 2 daily flight from june 20,Air Canada and many european carriers that offer short time connections), and the new airlines that will enter the market in the fall(Lambda, AA and a possible return of Tower).

One possible way for them to increase traffic from the US is to sell not only US to Israel flights, but for them to be a connecting carrier for those that want to travel further on. (ie: NYC to India via Tel Aviv). This would increase their traffic volume considerably.

An Alliance with a US airline wouldn't hurt either.

Boomer,

They do have a relationship with American Airlines. AA members can earn and burn miles on El Al.

Apirchik, saw the MD-11 the other day at EWR.Ques. since LY(ELAL)is leasing this and they don't have any DC craft in their stable, where did they get the pilots from?
Hard to believe LY will use any pilot that wasn'tb their own due to security concerns. Then maybe they hire out pilots who are certified for the MD-11 that happen to be Israelis to get around it. do you know what they did?

I think I read that they lease the planes with a complete crew. I also saw the plane in TLV and EWR.I'm flying the line again next week(with CO). I'll try to find out more when I'm there.

The AA ElAl thing may not be that strong. I think I read somewhere that if ElAl was to start co-charing with DL, AA would walk from their agreement. ElAl with SkyTeam, an interesting thought? It seems anything may happen these days?

ElAl did this because AA announced that they would start flying to Israel. They actually revoked the agreement by this

So I have heard, however there FFB STINKS in regards to TLV.80,000 for upgrading,90,000 for a free coach.Heck,BA gives a free Business for 80,000,and the best food I've had in the air. Nope I'll stay with DL/AF for now,but it'll be AA/BA in 01 or 02, or AA alone if they go in with 777's and decent award levels.
