Visually, it does look as the route over KSA is shorter especially as the aircraft doesnt have to dodge countries like Iran. Compare CX675 to how TK flies to IST.

Visually perhaps, but if you check flight times by segment they come up to be similar. Don't undestand why.

the route for HKG-IST you have shown actually flies over Turkmenistan rather than over Iran. The issue is with Afghanistan and Pakistan.

CX675 actual flight distance on Mar. 13 is 5,656 miles. Simulated flight over KSA gives 5,199 miles.

I sure hope so. I need a better way to redeem *A points to Asia. There's almost never any availability on CX with AA miles either so can't use those.

KSA, at least for a while. RSA is South Africa, would be quite a bit longer.

Inaugural flight path

https://twitter.com/DanWilliams/status/976813631630389248?s=19

According to FlightRadar24, Air Indias maiden flight to Tel Aviv, which took off an hour ago, will only scrape the top of Saudi territory - having first overflown Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. https://t.co/sNaLyOtEEr

This is only the shortest theoretically calculated route.
Let see how it will fly before reaching any conclusion.
For sure it will not fly over those countries.

I haven't posted on FT in many years... but today is indeed historic. Looks like others are following AI139 live as well (unfortunately as pointed out, VT-ANX appears to be observing radio silence).

Haha, the problem there is not Israel. You know Thailand and Saudi don't have good relations, right? No flights to RUH/JED from all time tourism favourite BKK, can you imagine? Look up the "Blue Diamond Affair".
