First time - Opup
I've bee flying with LY about once a month for the past 3 years.
Two years ago I got SL, one year ago I got GL.
Never got an opup...
Finally yesterday I was booked on TLV-FRA in Economy (B) on a 737-700. The flight was overbooked in Y and pretty empty in C.
At check in the agent asked me if I'd be willing to get an upgrade for free...
When I boarded my BP beeped and I was upgraded. C was still half empty and I had two seets for myself.
Hope I won't wait 3 more years forthe nex time....

Very often get the 100 point upgrade and/or use a 700 point voucher.
Opups (which don't cost points) hardly ever happen for me. In fact, 2 of the 3 times it happened in cases where I had already used a voucher to get into C and they needed the seat so they upped me to F.

I have been upgraded twice to F from business a on JFK/EWR to TLV and once to business from coach TLV-JFK. Both times the F upgrade was a total surprise since it was before I had El Al status - I was Gold on AA - (probably because my company was actually paying for a ticket in Business).
As is typical of ElAl, when I got upgraded from coach to business (at this point I had status matched platinum from Delta so was PL) the dialogue went like this:
ELAL - "Hi, we're calling to tell you that your 4pm flight has been moved up to 2pm"
Me: "I can't make 2pm since I have a noon meeting in Tel Aviv
Them: Ok, we'll put you on another flight
Me: Great put me on one of the flights later that night
Them: can't do that, they are full
Me: In coach or in business
Them: wide open in business but we can't upgrade you because you didn't pay enough for your ticket
Me: And I am platinum?! So now who will pay for an extra day for my hotel?
Them: We'll call you back
Next day they call me back and say: The flight is back on for 4pm instead of 2pm
When I get to the airport I find myself opped-up to business on my original flight. ...?! Not that I'm complaining, but it is another unfortunate example of ElAl's attitude towards customers and why I haven't been flying them much lately if I can help it.
