Denied Boarding By Easyjet

Dear All,
I was denied boarding by Easyjet on 23rd June from the flight Basel to Istanbul. The person from the airport company said that I will get 400€ of compensation and hotel etc. So I sent a mail to easyjet customer service and first they said that they wont pay me because my flight is delayed only 15 minutes but the flight they are talking about is the one on 24th. So I scanned my boarding card from the 23rd and from 24th. They said that sorry for the inconvenience and they will look into it. After that mail which was 2 weeks ago they stopped mailing me. So now I really dont know what to do and I want to sue them or if I could find their phone number call them and ask what is going on. I am waiting for your advices.

If you were denied boarding then either you turned up late or for some reason the airline said you weren't fit to fly. Neither would entitle you to compensation

Yes, we need more information about the circumstances to be able to comment more meaningfully.

They denied my boarding due to overbooking and I dont know if this changes anything but they asked for volunteers so I volunteered. Also does anyone has phone number of easyjet customer services? And how can I sue them if they wont pay me soon?

+44 871 244 2377 is their normal contact number but check the numbers in saynoto0870

But I do have to admit that overbooking is a surprise for Easyjet - most of the low costs don't overbook as they don't give refunds therefore don't have to worry about no-shows

I agree that easyJet do not deliberately overbook. What may have happened, and this is a complete guess, is that the flight was not overbooked but, for some reason, there were not enough cabin crew available on the day. A typical full flight needs 4 cabin crew and the rules state that there must be a certain ratio of crew to pax (I think it something like 1:50). Therefore if only three cabin crew turn up, the maximum number of pax allowed if 150. So, if there were 155 pax booked on the flight easyJet may have taken the decision to offload 5 in order to get the flight off the ground. Especially if the starting point was not one of their hubs and they couldn’t get an extra crew member to the flight within a reasonable amount of time.

Pure speculation of course but it sounds reasonable to me, given that easyJet do appear to be having staffing problems in some parts of Europe.

As an update I called them (thanks for the number alanR) and they told me that they are investigating and will inform me in couple of days. I think the reason was that 2 tickets has been sold simultaneously on-line and from a traveling agency.

I would not take legal advice from flyertalkers. What was the result of their investigation?

Did you volunteer (VDB) or did they force you to be bumped (IDB)?

A bit OT but....

I can't help with your problem, but on my last Easyjet flight (in the middle of one of the BA strikes so the plane was packed) they asked for volunteers to be bumped. They had had two medical emergencies on the way out and didn't have enough oxygen cylinders on board to carry a full complement of passengers. Apparently no oxygen could be located at Faro and they failed to find another flight which could detour to Faro en route from elsewhere in Europe. They had to ask several times - each time the compensation increased - but eventually they got enough volunteers and we made it home, albeit several hours late after the length of time they had spent trying to find alternatives.

I'm amazed that you weren't either given compensation at the time or given something in writing so you could pursue it without too much of a struggle later. Has it been resolved yet?

Finally they told me that they would pay me 400 euros this week and that the issue was they were trying to get confirmation from the airport so I think calling them is the key
