Why is it that the US is the only market where these 'less filling' beers are so relevant....
Or am I mistaken...?

In Australia we have
- Pure Blonde
- Hahn Super Dry
- Toohey's White Stag
- Bondi Blonde
- Peroni Leggera (not sure how widespread this is in Italy)
- Carlton Dry
All low-carb, then we have mid-stregth/light alcohol content beers.

No one wants a beer gut on the beach...and, well, when you're in Northern Europe you're not really thinking about the beach.

ETA: IMO light beers in Australia are much better tasting than their American counterparts.

Japan loves their light beer too.
American beer outside of the microbrewery beer is light enough as is. Tastes like soda water with expiration date exceeded flavor packets added. Blech.

No, light beers are available in a lot of places. Off the top of my head, I recall Amstel Light (Holland and elsewhere), Polar Light and Solera Light (Venezuela), Beck's Light (Germany) and Mahou Light (Spain).
I will commit suicide if Chimay Light ever hits the market!
