A friend of mine mentioned on Facebook he was in Portland, I asked him "will a Voodoo Doughnut be consumed?" and he said "what's that?"

I told him I didn't know him anymore. :D

The Doughnut Vault (401 N. Franklin St. Chicago, IL no phone avail) has big, piping hot, chewy, delicious doughnuts in a few simple old fashioned flavors. They sell out pretty much every day so it pays to get there early. I can only go once in a blue moon because they are too good!

YES! Although I only have to drive 5 minutes :D

They would certainly be a stop on a trip to Baltimore or a long weekend in the area.

If you do go, turn left as soon as you walk in the market--that is where the donuts are made to perfection. To your right will be a wonderful bakery.

(The link mentions Cockeysville, but the site also talks about Hagerstown. Its Cockeysville/Hunt Valley I am talking about here.)

I occasionally can convince Mr. Kipper to cross the Mason-Dixon line to head to Baltimore, since it's not too far (about an hour) for us.

One of them is right across from the Hilton Garden Inn Outer Banks/Kitty Hawk. I saw it from my room and knew I should have stopped there!

Carol Lee in Blacksburg, VA

In Blacksburg, VA, there was a doughnut shop outside of the university called Carol Lee. They had to have been the best doughnuts I've ever tasted that was not mass produced (ie Krispy Kreme). I am sad to have learned that they have closed, a casualty of the economic recession.

Not so! Carol Lee is very much a going concern, though they have moved from downtown to North Main (I'm told -- we moved in since then).

I've been on the west coast for a couple of months on business, but Carol Lee is the first place I'll stop when I return in a couple of weeks.

Correct - they moved to where the Carol Lee cake shop used to be. But still sad - too far to walk from main campus now.

+1 ^ I almost forgot about Doughnut Plant. I love their creme brulee donuts/donut holes(?) It's a bit expensive for a donut, but worth the extra bucks for their effort.

Ohlin's Bakery in Belmont, MA has the best doughnuts I've ever had.

Without a doubt - Krispy Kreme for me.

After revisiting Voodoo Doughnuts last month, I think they're again top of the pops. This was lunch:

Oh it is, amazingly high quality bacon too for a doughnut. I was a little hesitant about ordering it but it was such a good choice.

No one is commenting on the one with the Fruity Pebbles, or whatever the heck that is? :D

Therefore, Im all over it :) actually it looks better than the Bacon one to me. I need to check out Voodoo sometime when I am in that area..

I was never a fan of very sugary cereals, so the Captain Crunch/Fruity Pebbles kinda turns my tummy.

Many people say that about the maple bacon. When we were in Portland last year we asked our hosts to take us there - they had never been and were prepared to hate the maple bacon. They were blown away.

In Montreal last week, I finally had the drinkable Iced Capp from Tim Horton's, but I also got one of their donuts, and it was NASTY.

So, I like hot glazed Krispy Kreme if they're available, otherwise, I prefer Dunkin.

It's called an O Captain my Captain and its Captain Crunch and Crunch Berries. It was amazing and served as the "dessert" to my bacon bar entree :D

You mean, Dunkin, as in, their donuts??? I prefer even the supermarkets over Dunkins. Dunkins is for coffee, not donuts.

If you ever get out to Worcester way, hunt down Donut Cafe. Hole in the wall coffee shop on Chandler, off the main drag, but while they last they have the best donuts in town.

I can't stand Dunkin's coffee. Their coffee is both too strong and too watery at the same time IMHO. Also, I prefer things like cafe lattes, and they only make flavored lattes.

I still prefer Dunkin's Boston Creme to whatever crap I had at Tim Horton's. Blech.

OMG, soooooo delicious! Totally worth it, I think. I love their seasonal specials...
We have one in Tokyo with specialized Japanese flavors in addition to the norm...

I wonder if there is one in the UK?
I will be fat then...
;)

Tim Hortons

Okay, after reviewing this thread, I note that it has already been said here and there in some fashion, but for amplification here it goes.....

TIM HORTONS TIMBITS* FTW! :D^

*Timbits: ~3 cm diameter spheres (balls) that are made from the same ingredients as their normal donuts. I particularly enjoy their chocolate-glazed timbit

Note this is for those Tim Hortons located in Canada. I have not yet visited any of their locations State-side so I have nothing to compare to, though some posts near the start of this thread have stated that State-side Timmys tastes different. YMMV.

I love donuts....but my favorite is the one that I get from the coffee cart on the corner by my office. NYC has a ton of these coffee/pastry carts in the mornings and without fail, the donut I get from there is always the one I dream about! I have no idea where they come from, but they're delicious!

MissJ Feb 22, 2012 12:15 pm

I'll give Voodoo the most fun award.
I enjoyed all of the inventive flavors of Frost in Seattle as well.

But... my absolute favorite place for donuts is definitely Round Rock Donuts. I'm drooling on my desk just thinking about them.

Okay, as I've been converting from Starbucks to Dunkin Donuts due to the program devaluation, I find myself buying more donuts along with the coffee.

But I learned a lesson last night. Don't go to Dunkin Donuts at 7:00 PM on Sunday night expecting variety. I had a choice of exactly 4 different donuts. One was glazed. The other 3 were some form of frosted donut. I guess that's what didn't sell. I ended up with a strawberry frosted with sprinkles, not even marginally fresh. I need to cut back on the donuts anyway. This will help.

gobluetwo Apr 25, 2016 9:42 am

Chicago has some solid doughnut establishments, like (CA import) Stan's, Doughnut Vault (mentioned above), Firecakes, and Do-rites.

Also, if fillings are your thing, you just can't forget about all the great Polish bakeries in Chicago which sell paczki (pronounced pownch-key).

nightkhan Apr 25, 2016 11:31 am

Doughnut Plant (NYC) is amazing. My faves are their creme brulee doughseed and dulce de leche cake donuts. My work was closing up our desk in SF and relocating to NYC and it was DPlant that convinced me to move.

Dough (NYC) donuts are also amazing. I feel like their yeast donuts are better than the yeast donuts at Dplant.

Underwest Donuts (NYC). It's inside a carwash.

Doughnut Vault (Chi) old fashioneds are really amazing too.

:) I've found if it is after about 5 PM, it's not worth the visit.
