I'm adding Tim Hortons to my list. I went since I posted on this thread and was amazed by how good they were. However, I'm adding the caveat that they must be in Canada, not the fake ones in Michigan.

There's a place north east of Seattle called Frost that makes an awesome bacon maple donut as well.

Excellent point. I've had Tim's here in the U.S. and tried them again when I was in Edmonton. The difference was amazing. Canada's definitely getting the better donuts.

Of course there is the Yreka Bakery in Yreka CA.

There are two doughnuts I really like at the bakery in St Germain Wisconsin located in Trig's. (used to be a free standing bakery years ago and the local store assumed it) A plain cake doughnut or if I'm feeling the need for a sweet topping, I'll get the cake doughnut with cream cheese frosting.

Also in Cincinnati area, there is the Hyde Park doughnut shop, where they served some delicious buttermilk doughnuts.

Krispy Kreme is terrible, far too sweet IMO.

cblaisd Oct 15, 2010 2:44 pm

I  Krispy Kreme -- as long as they are not hot. Ugh. Room temperature - perfect!

seamaster73 Oct 16, 2010 6:56 pm

The best doughnuts are at six flags vallejo in a crepe shop near the kids area. Freshly made and hot and so good....check em out if You are in the park

MWRFlyer Oct 20, 2010 9:31 pm

Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, OR. Such creative combos and the experience of going down there late at night/early in the morning makes them all the better.

We already knew that the Obamas were fond of Fran's Chocolates from Seattle (and who wouldn't be if you only knew) but today Top Pot was added to the list of Presidential Doughnut Purveyors. If only the US had royal warrants ("By appointment to...") it looks like Seattle would be leading on the First Family Sweet Tooth front.

Case in point - I was in New Orleans on my way to Cafe du Monde (beignets!). On my way, I passed a Krispy Kreme - a chain with respectable doughnuts, but nothing close to CdM's beignets. The line at Krispy Kreme was out the door, but I was able to walk right into CdM and get my beignets in minutes. Worked out great for me -- better food in less time -- but it just made no sense....

Beignets and doughnuts aren't the same thing. It's absurd to compare one to the other.

I'm with you on this (and we may be the only two people in the universe with this opinion). I love KK doughnuts, but I actually avoid the store when they "Hot doughnuts now" sign is lit.

I have to agree on Top Pot! Found it by accident. Was walking around Seattle and the smell coming from Top Pot was fantastic. Stopped in for a donut and coffee. Then went back later in the afternoon. And again in the morning before heading to the airport.

Voodoo in Portland also rocks!

So, best 2 donut shops are in the Pacific Northwest.

If it weren't for Stan's being on the other side of Los Angeles (from where I am) and in an area where parking is a hassle, I'd go more than once or twice a year.

If visiting San Diego drive to Ocean Beach (1830 Sunset Cliffs) and stop by OB Donuts, run by a Cambodian family and constantly rated the BEST in SD.They always seem to throw something extra in your bag.

In Quakertown, PA there is a donut shop called Yum Yum Bake Shop. http://www.yumyumbakeshops.com/index.php

They are all yeast raised donuts are are just to die for.

If you are a chocolate lover, you MUST get the Chocolate Thunder. It is a large donut, filled with chocolate cream, topped with a chocolate gnache and chocolate sprinkles.

If you prefer vanalia, you should get the White Lightning. It's the same as the Chocoloate Thunder, but with vanalia flavored cream, glaze, and sprinkles.

They have been featured by the local TV station:
http://www.wfmz.com/news/22687395/detail.html

They have also won Best Donuts in the Philadelphia Area by Philadelphia Daily News, and Best Donuts in Bucks County and Montgomery County by the North Penn Reporter

In the U.S.--#1 My mother's homemade donuts. #2 May's Donuts, New Castle, PA. The donuts made by the new owners aren't quite as good as those made by the former owners, but still better than anywhere else in the USA.

Outside the U.S.--Bosnia has the best jelly donuts bar none. Also hands down the best coffee.

+1
especially the one's that u get free for watching them make doughnuts. :D

I have a deep and abiding love for Krispy Kreme glazed. But fortunately I don't eat a lot of doughnuts--I fear the results if I did.

I went there a few times as a kid, over ten years ago (used to go to Quakertown alot to visit relatives). I remember it being excellent. If I ever get back to Q-town, i'll have to try Yum Yum again. :)

There's a place down the street from my house called Legendary Donuts, which is great as well. They do alot of specialty donuts. ^

Flying Machine Nov 4, 2010 6:39 am

Not sure if it has been mentioned before in this thread. But Donut Man in Glendora, California gets a lot of love around here. They have a famous Strawberry Donunt (in season) and my personal favorite is their Tiger Tail..

ghia74 Nov 4, 2010 7:00 am

The Market Basket in Franklin Lakes, NJ. Not a lot of variety as it just one of the many items in this high end supermarket but they have the best Boston cream and powdered donuts.

ImagineTravelA Nov 4, 2010 8:02 am

Doughnuts of Pittsfield Rye Bakery... they are the best. I love them.

oh. yes. I have eaten that once. Loved it. I miss it. Never tried Tiger Tail though.. will try that next time I''m there.

How many of you have tried the doughnuts of RANDY’S DONUTS (LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA) ... they are supposed to be the best doughnuts ever. They are pure heaven.

Craze Nov 5, 2010 9:03 pm

Freshly made jam donuts from the donut van at Queen Victoria market (melbourne) can't go wrong! Otherwise Krispy Kreme's doughnuts are pretty good too, but too sweet for me >.<

Japanese Doughnut Briefcase

This seemed the right place to post a link to Japan's protective lockable doughnut briefcase.

Might work for bagels, too, but that's another thread.

mrbrad Nov 8, 2010 12:39 pm

Regarding the lockable briefcase: that's awesome! I particularly like the indication that you can place a sucker in the designated "center hole."

"You can use any regular lock to make sure nobody... and I mean NOBODY takes your donut"

Ha! Japanese food storage designers are ingenious.

Austin Winters Nov 8, 2010 1:46 pm

If anyone has been to Atlantis in the Bahamas, they made the most amazing doughnuts in the mornings for breakfast. A warm pastry topped with a light and warm chocolate or vanilla icing. Never have I tasted a better doughnut.

Starwood Lurker Nov 9, 2010 2:28 pm

I was in Seattle last weekend, so I dropped by Top Pot because of the recommendations in this thread. They certainly make some tasty doughnuts and good coffee. I was particularly found of the pumpkin cake doughnut, but for my money, Round Rock Doughnuts still take the cake. Maybe someone who came to the first Austin Mega Do and had them during the Customer Contact Center tour and who has also tried Top Pot could offer their viewpoint?

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I definitely want to check out Old Fashioned Donuts. It's waaaay on the south side and in kind of a scary area....

Nothing beats krispy kreme for glazed...

jackal Nov 18, 2010 4:43 pm

While I've never had Top Pot or Voodoo before (someone remind me next time I'm in the PNW!), I sat across from an FA on a QX shuttle flight recently and, because of the turbulence, got to talk for the entire flight. The subject of donuts came up (someone had boarded with a box of Voodoo), and the FA said that Voodoo's donuts are more known for their interesting flavor combinations and toppings (they're famous for their maple bar with bacon on top, and they also do donuts with different sugary cereals on top), but Top Pot's donuts are far supreme in actual quality.

Hmmm. My bacon would have to be much crispier than this, but I like the idea, if perhaps there were a little more bacon involved:

Siempre Viajando Nov 23, 2010 5:59 pm

On donuts (doughnuts?) there's no debate...

The best are from the Canadian chain Tim Horton's.

My favourite at TH is their biscuit breakfast sandwich with sausage and eggs. Better McDonald's IMO. OTOH, I seldomly eat TH's donuts (or donuts in general).

obscure2k Nov 25, 2010 1:09 pm

I tend to stay as far away from donuts as possible. However, my favorite restaurant, Tavern (www.tavernla.com) had donuts in their take-out bakery section yesterday. They were sweet potato donuts, with a maple glaze and bits of bacon on top. Unbelievably delicious. Thankfully, I was with a friend and we split it.

Yes, it will have a problems your blood sugar. Just stay away from donuts. Because I haven't eat donuts for a long time. So I won't eat the donuts anymore. If you have a problem the diabetes. You should consider to talks your doctor. Haven't you gone to Dunkin Donuts?

obscure2k Nov 25, 2010 1:41 pm

Have never been to a Dunkin Donuts

Rejuvenated Nov 25, 2010 1:58 pm

Whenever I think of Dunkin' Donuts, I think about Boston. It seems to be part of the culture there.

When it comes to donut preference without any discrimination, look no further to Homer Simpson.

Agreed. I used to date a girl who lived in Allston, MA and when we were going to take early road trips, she refused to go until we'd gone to Dunkin' Donuts first. It's not bad in New England, but still nothing to get excited over.
