Doughnuts for Dessert

I have to agree with Jason!

Someone said earlier, "Beignets and doughnuts aren't the same thing. It's absurd to compare one to the other." Yeah, but sometimes that sort of comparison makes sense. Sopaipillas are sort of like doughnuts for dessert and Pancho's Mexican Buffet ( a small chain in LA, TX, OK, NM, & AZ) has the best! Fresh and hot out of the fryer, doused in honey - hard to beat!

So, for me it's Krispy Kreme to start the day & Pancho's sopaipillas to end it.

My grandmother's homemade doughnuts, fresh from the fryer and rolled in cinnamon and sugar.

Her glazed crullers are pretty damned tasty too.

Krispy Kreme are good (the original, anyway), but they are certainly not "all that". So many better donuts in the world.....

Here in Michigan, there were a bunch of KK places at one time. Now, I can't tell you of one that is still around. But almost all of the other donut places still exist around here.

CMK10 Dec 1, 2010 1:10 pm

The North Carolina State Fair featured cheeseburgers served between glazed Krispy Kremes this year. I wasn't brave enough to try them.

Rejuvenated Dec 1, 2010 11:33 pm

One of my employee brought a box of Krispy Kreme to the office the other day. As soon as the other workers saw it, most of them rushed out of their seats to get a piece. Most of their reactions were "Wow, Krispy Kreme.....can't beat this". Krispy Kreme personally is okay for me once in a while and as I stated before, I seldomly eat donuts.

mrbrad Dec 2, 2010 9:27 am

I am not a fan of glazed donuts, so I don't care for KK. I prefer the cider-style cake donuts that are only ever good when fresh from the cider mill / apple orchard.

If I'm hankering for a mass market donut, it'll be dunkin' donuts purely due to the coffee.

At the risk of veering off topic, I've tried DD coffee many times and still can't figure out its popularity. It's just weak, flavorless, brown water!

Coffee Ann in Westport Connecticut is the best

My Dad took me to Stan's Donuts in Los Angeles last weekend. I had a jelly donut and a peanut butter pocket. It's a damn fine place and we met Stan, the owner, who is quite the card.

Try Malasadas in Honolulu.

http://www.leonardshawaii.com/

I do not usually eat donuts but theirs was so good that I had two with cinnamon sugar - no fillings (for less guilt).
Yummy.

I like Ronald's Doughnuts in Las Vegas. At least half of them are vegan which works for me. I especially like the maple, coconut and oh so many flavors. Also good vegan jelly rolls. I love this place.

Another vote for Krispy Kreme!

sent Dec 28, 2010 2:10 am

As far as chain's go, I grew up going to DD every Sunday with my dad and later Tim Horton's when we moved to Buffalo. I slightly preferred DD over Tim Hortons for doughnuts and the other way around for the doughnut holes. I came across my first Krispy Kreme as an adult and never went crazy for the hot doughnut thing. IMO, the cake doughnuts at Dunkin Donuts are much better than Krispy Kreme. The yeast doughnuts at each place aren't comparable. I feel like they are two totally different products and recipes.

But I wouldn't necessarily call either place "the best doughnut." Doughnuts aren't something I've really seeked out to try while traveling in the US so I haven't noticed as many non-chain places compared to other food categories. I'd love to look for them and try them out, but my scale already hates me for my other secret food indulgences. :(

CMK10 Dec 28, 2010 10:44 am

Tasty Bakery in Graham, North Carolina. We had an assortment of those, Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme at work last week and the Tasty Bakery ones were the clear winners.

Krispy Kremes: last time I had some was in Korea in a basement area food court. --We had coupons for free donuts, too. Then there is Leonard's malasadas in Hawaii --yummy with cold milk.

Pumpkin donuts at Halloween time

CMK10 Jul 25, 2011 3:57 pm

After going to Round Rock Donuts for my first time, I may have a new champion. The glazed donut holes were absurdly good, I can't even begin to explain the feeling of melting in my mouth. Plus I got a sausage kolache, a chocolate milk and a chocolate covered donuts for $3.50!

Healthy Coffee

Everyone has their opinion of the best donut, usually their hometown favorite, which is awesome. The best donuts in U.S. are "potato raised" at Bradenton Donuts in Bradenton with Healthy Coffee, FL. Jenny and Peter pamper each donut and their customers!

Perhaps the next time I drop the dogs off to be boarded for a weekend, I'll have to pick up some cider donuts.

I love Tim Hortons and have been trying to convince Mr. Kipper to road trip to Canada just for those! :)

They are all yeast raised donuts are are just to die for.

If you are a chocolate lover, you MUST get the Chocolate Thunder. It is a large donut, filled with chocolate cream, topped with a chocolate gnache and chocolate sprinkles.

If you prefer vanalia, you should get the White Lightning. It's the same as the Chocoloate Thunder, but with vanalia flavored cream, glaze, and sprinkles.

They have been featured by the local TV station:
http://www.wfmz.com/news/22687395/detail.html

They have also won Best Donuts in the Philadelphia Area by Philadelphia Daily News, and Best Donuts in Bucks County and Montgomery County by the North Penn Reporter

I'm adding this to my list of places to stop when I head out that way next. :) Thanks!

Outside the U.S.--Bosnia has the best jelly donuts bar none. Also hands down the best coffee.

May's Donuts in New Castle? Again, I think I may have to road trip to try these. :)

It's worse in the UK. 'Tim Horton's' is in Spar and is similar to the coffee and doughnut offering in most US 7/11.
