The "Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest" thread
USA, USA, USA
------------
The big dogs are in town.
The two main rivals in the annual Coney Island hot dog-eating contest held a dramatic stare-down yesterday as they prepared to battle tomorrow for the biggest prize in competitive eating.
"Hot dogs on the Fourth of July - it doesn't get any better," said Joey Chestnut, 25, of San Jose, Calif.
This year's frank fight is a grudge match between Chestnut and six-time Coney champ Takeru Kobayashi of Japan.
"It's going to be a good battle this year," said Kobayashi, 31, through an interpreter. "I'm going to bring the belt back."
The two men, dubbed "eating legends" by organizers, have split the past four stomach-stuffin' contests on the Boardwalk. Now it's time to pass the mustard and settle the score.

The eating conditions are perfect today. Nice weather, light breeze. Go with the over...at least 62 dogs will be consumed today by the winner.

The odds on Chestnut are 20/31? Why would anyone in their right mind bet $31 to win $20 in a hot dog eating contest? Even the odds on Kobayashi are our of whack.

Chestnut eats 68 dogs/buns in 12 minutes ... don't even think Cool Hand Luke could do that.

Joey Chestnut, Hot Dog Eating Champ, Is Dethroned in Coney Island
Joey Chestnut, one of America’s most famous competitive eaters, missed his chance to claim a ninth consecutive victory in the annual Fourth of July Nathan’s Famous hot-dog-eating contest in Coney Island, Brooklyn.
Mr. Chestnut was dethroned by Matt Stonie, who finished second last year. Mr. Stonie, 23, downed 62 hot dogs and buns on Saturday, beating Mr. Chestnut by two, according to The Associated Press.
“I trained hard for this; this is actually amazing,” Mr. Stonie told ESPN.
Mr. Chestnut has vowed to return next year to try to reclaim his title.

I have a friend that used to do this. Never won but he was a ranked competitive eater. It's something that requires more training than people think.

Congrats, Joey, for bringing this championship home!
