McAllisters's in Cowboy country (OKC)

The ultimate sandwich shop and huge stuffed baked potatoes as well.

Have to agree here, there is no place in the world like Strawn's. Their strawberry pie . . . oh boy! Every day they serve a homemade meal special. If my memory serves me correctly Wednesday is fried chicken day and Friday is Roast Beef. Yes, many a day studying (yea right) and chowing down at Strawn's.

Oklahoma City top restaurants

Here is a brief list of the restaurants we frequent often in Oklahoma City. They are all wonderful!

Ted's Cafe Escondito - Mexican (better than Texas) My favorite of all
Cattlemen's Steakhouse
Jimmy's Egg - Breakfast and lunch
Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse - Steaks and such must try their fried pickles
Earl's BBQ

Please feel free to PM for more.

Hey, you can tell you're in the SOUTH by whether the Iced Tea is assumed to be served sweetened...

Consider my cross-country forays on I-40:
New Mexico & Oklahoma serve the tea unsweetened.
Texas and Arkansas you have to ask if you want it unsweetened.

Welcome to American regional cuisine...

Depends where in Texas... around Dallas/Fort Worth its almost never served sweetened. You have to ask for it that way!

names can be misleading

I'm in Sonoma County, CA. There's a small chain here called Cattlemen's and boy is it garbage. Hugely popular, however, with the crowd that doesn't know good food. Looks like a trailer-trash convention most nights. Oddly, you will spend as much in there as in a fairly fine-dining restaurant. Way better, but I think it's a large chain is Outback. At least the one near me is real good.

Portillo's in Chicagoland. I'm drooling just thinking about a chocolate cake shake.

I can't imagine it is the same, but who knows. Here is the website.

I know everyone in the South knows about Bojangles but none of my northern friends do. its a fast food chain thats only in the South and it has amzing biscuits...

Welcome to DC! There are a few Bojangles in the Maryland suburbs - Oxon Hill may be the closest.

Another shout out for 5 Guys. Hard Times Cafe is a local chain and fast, but a sit down place more than take out. Good chili and the best wings in the area - asked for 'em crispy on the grill.

Cheers,
Jeff

A chain I enjoyed while I was travelling around Tasmania was Legs 'n' Breasts - it's a BBQ Chicken chain. Great chicken burgers, and tasty sides too - and who could resist a name like that? :D. A fair few outlets around Southern Tasmania.

Another one I like (well not sure if it's a chain, but certainly has the potential to be one if not) is Burp Burritos in Adelaide - always stop in there when I'm down there for work - goes down smooth!

Beefaroo in Rockford IL. They're the best fast food I've had anywhere.

Definitely check out California Sandwiches

They also have meatball, steak sandwiches and those hot stuffed olives...

It is common for people to preorder 20-30 sandwiches or more for their fellow office workers, etc. so they are ready for pickup.

Celebs of various sorts are known to frequent these spots, particularly the one on Clinton Street close to downtown Toronto.

Check one out.

Beermonger is absolutely right - the best veal sandwich I've ever had. Also up there for regional finds:

Lick's - great homestyle hamburgers, chili and ice cream. There are a few scattered around Toronto.

Weber's - a legend for folks travelling north - located about an hour north of Toronto on the side of the highway. Burgers so amazing they built the only private highway pedestrian bridge in Canada so people could grab one heading south too

I've only been to some other Cattlemen's (mainly one up in the Sacramento area nearish to a friend's place in Elk Grove) but in my experience, Outback and Cattlemen's are about on par in terms of quality of beef (fair, far from great) and prices (reasonable, but not inexpensive) at each.

Outback is definitely a large chain, and I prefer it to Cattlemen's, as they have more interesting non-beef items on their menu.

I like Sonic a lot; there aren't any in my area of California, but there are some in the central part of the state, and there's one in Reno I usually hit on those occasions when I go up to gamble.

Then there's Del Taco, which is SOOO much better than Taco Bell it's not funny, although it's a bit embarrassing to go there given the massive number of good local tacquerias around here.

Back east, one old favorite that's on its last legs is Bickford's, which is sort of a New England-local version of Denny's or IHOP... the baked apple "pancakes" are to die for.

Friendly's also kind of meets that description, although it's less of a breakfast place, and adds in an interesting array of Ice Cream desserts (they are, or were, owned by Hershey's)
