Opened a new THH today - fantastic. Had always been one of my favorites. May do a blind taste against KO1, 2, WFE 10 and Redemption Ancients 18. |

I was disappointed neither I nor my wife won a GTS in the VA ABC lottery. They had like 10x the bottle allocation of GTS as some of the stuff we have won (like the Parker's for this year, which was fantastic)... guess luck wasn't in our favor.
Drinking some Jefferson Twin Oak right now; when I first opened it Sunday, I wasn't impressed (it was more a $40 bourbon than an $80 one), but tonight, it's drinking much better. Still a bit overpriced at $80, though. |

I'm only lukewarm on the Double Rye, and I tend to really like other High West whiskies. The Midwinter's Night Dram, the Bourye (and Son of Bourye), etc., are all good rye/high-rye whiskies they put out. Yippie-kay-yay is a bit too mellow for my tastes in rye from their lineup, too, FWIW.

Have made a bunch of pickups over the past few weeks, but a few that stand out (and aren’t unobtanium): - New Riff single barrel - Pinhook - Willett 4yr rye - OKI 10 year (by New Riff) Got lucky and got Old Forester Birthday Bourbon at retail Friday - considering trading it out. I’ve also found that I’ve been going for my Kentucky Owl Rye, OWA and Blanton’s Gold much more often, so picked up some backups :D |

Keep an eye out for Double Rye store picks - they're bottled at full proof. MWND is great, but I'm not particularly liking Act 6 Scene 1 - has a bit of a brine-y taste to it. Yippie is a vile, disgusting bottle. Hated it on opening it and hated it just as much after letting it sit a bit. Just gave the bottle away as I didn't even want it on my shelf.
Will have to look for Double Rye store picks. Some of the online shops I use get them regularly; VA ABC not so much so, but there are MD shops I think that do. |
Need an Education
.... I am neither a bourbon drinker nor know much of anything about aged liquor.... and was hoping the connoisseurs here might be able to give me some insights on two bottles of bourbon which my wife has from her deceased father. The first is Very Very Old Fitzgerald, and the second is Old Weller. My father-in-law most likely received them as gifts sometime in 1980's. They both have screw tops (not corked), and what appears to be tax stamps.... which might date the bottles. It does not seem that the bottles have lost any volume to evaporation. Any thought on what I have here? I have a pic of the two bottles, but I am new here and have no idea how to include in this message.
|
This weekend my oldest son texted me a picture of a double shot of bourbon sitting on a bartop and told me that I need to get ahold of a bottle of Elmer T Lee. Unfortunately, the internet tells me I will need to drive 300 miles to do so.

The Very Very Old Fitzgerald can easily be worth north of $2k, depending on the condition of the tax stamps, fill level, etc. I've seen a bottle of Old Weller 107 from 1977 sell for $1,300 and that was almost two years ago. If you send the Old Weller tax stamp code to Buffalo Trace (the current distillers of Weller) they can probably date it for you, at least within a range. I've seen them do this before for other bottles of Old Weller. Heaven Hill distilled the Very Very Old Fitz, and might be able to do the same for that bottle. There are only a few legal ways to sell these. One option is through a broker (such as https://www.sellcellar.com/) or to a place like Justin's House of Bourbon in Lexington). They will value the bottles and provide offers to buy them, though keep in mind they need to make their cut too so you'll probably top out at 70 cents on the dollar or less. Or, if the liquid inside isn't cloudy, you might decide to crack open and enjoy a piece of history.

Elmer is good... it's one of those bottles that should cost $39 at retail but because of its scarcity often goes for $100+. I certainly wouldn't drive 300 miles for it. If you have a regular liquor store you visit, talk to them. They'll probably see it a couple times a year, and there is usually a spring release. If you're a good customer, and it's an independent store (as opposed to a mega-chain) they might give you a call or put one aside for you when it comes in.

Thank you for both the insights and the leads as to where I might find out more information. It is appreciated. P.S. At these price points I know I don't have the appropriate palette to appreciate what it is I potentially have, so probably no piece of history passing these lips. |

Tried a local brand while staying in Hamilton, NY. It was a bit too sweet for my taste but I like trying regional liquors when I can. |

My wife delivered a bottle of the Old Rip Van Winkle 10 to me for Valentine's Day, a VA ABC lottery win.
It's good, and worth the retail price (IIRC it was $60), but IMHO is a bit harsh compared to the older Pappy products (even the 2 years more age for the Lot B I have makes a huge difference). People are insane to pay aftermarket for it other than to claim they have a bottle of "Pappy." |
Packing up some friends to bring along on vacation. Excited to finally try the 2007 and 2008 WLW. I also hope Michter's does another Toasted Barrel Finish release again this year... such maple syrupy goodness...

My latest aquisition is Blade and Bow. Spiciest bourbon I have tasted to date. Diageo bought the old Stitzel Weller facility and this product contains (minute amounts of ) what was in the remaining barrels on hand . A pretty solid $50 bottle in its own right.

Two favorites in my rotation are Blanton's Gold Edition and Four Roses Super Premium (Platinum).

Have some OFC 1993 on the way. Planning to pour that and Michter’s Celebration sour mash for our 10 year anniversary. |

Was in Texas for work and came across minis of Balcones Baby Blue and Balcones Single Malt -- have seen the big bottles at the NC ABC before so decided to give it at go.
Not a fan at all. Balcones Baby Blue has a vodka smell to it (presumably from the corn) and I am not a vodka fan so that made it a pretty unappealing drink. Balcones Single Malt had an odd taste and similarly was not a fan. Won't be buying -- glad to have figured that out for $10 with a couple minis instead of investing in a whole bottle |
Balcones is a mixed bag IMHO. Their head distiller left some time back, and they haven't been the same since.
Baby Blue is terrible. It's just foul. Band-aids and vodka and no real corn or wood flavors. The single malt is OK... but just OK. I like their smoked bourbon (mesquite smoked, IIRC). They used to have another bourbon that was fantastic (True Blue, IIRC), but it's not available today. |
Nice to see Willett's own distillate finally starting to come of age.

Has anyone tried Regent yet? It is from the collaborative efforts of Jim Beam and Suntory. Apparently suggested retail is about $35 per bottle. Just looking for impressions. |

Just arrived at vacation home in SW Florida yesterday and my local supplier suggests a bottle of 1792. Something about much of the bourbon in casks being lost to broken casks. Just has a sip or three...delicious! |

https://www.courier-journal.com/stor...nds/762389002/ It has not affected the availability of 1792, as they have 28 other rickhouses on site. |
I’d like to invite Flyertalk bourbon fans to the fifteenth LEX Horse and Bourbon DO Oct 3-6, 2019. Link in my signature. Or check Community Buzz. Every year we get numerous returnees. |
In Austin for work and went to the local liquor store just to peruse -- found a bunch of bottles of Weller Special Reserve for $24.99, wasn't planning to check a bag home but considering the fact I've never even seen the new bottle/label of any of the Weller series in North Carolina I couldn't resist snagging one. Also snagged a 50ML Johnnie Walker 18YO for $5.99 -- better than getting my nightcap from the hotel bar (which I'm sure would have cost at least as much if not more for a lesser bourbon/Scotch)
Now I can open this bottle and hang on to my last unopened Weller 107 for a while longer |
Friend hosted a bottle share tonight. Had Bald Monk, full range of some older BTAC, California Gold, 1969 Old Crow, WFE Bourbon picks, OWA picks, RR picks, local KC, EC picks, lots of dusty turkey. Pretty epic. |

I attended a bourbon tasting earlier. My favorite on offer was the Angels Envy. |
I had some Orphan Barrel Rhetoric 23 last weekend. It was super: smooth as silk and strong vanilla flavors.
|
Woodford Reserve!
