That and Louis Jadot, Beaujolais Village and many Shiraz |
Gravity Hills Base Camp Syrah
I recently bought a couple of bottles of Gravity Hills Base Camp Syrah after it got I think an 88 by Robert Parker. The cost was $15 by mail order (www.gravityhills.com).
Now here's the deal. After I ordered they sent me an email for a half-price wine offering. So I just bought two cases at $7.50 per bottle. This only lasted a few weeks, but who knows, they might have it again. I really liked this wine, and I would suggest you order a couple of bottles to get on their mailing list, assuming you can order wine direct in your state. |
Here's a good one:
2005 Milton Park Shiraz, Australia http://www.kysela.com/australia/Thornmiltonpark.htm It's selling for around $8 in the Washington DC area. |
cheap but decent pinot noir
Although people have disagreed with me about this one, I enjoyed the Estancia Pinot Noir (I think it was a 2002). It was relatively cheap at $10.99 and I enjoyed the darker, oaky notes and deep cherry flavor. I found it to be a different experience than most pinot noirs in this price range.

Domaine St. George Cabernet.
Older vintages sell for a lot more, but the more recent ones are very good and about $9 at Trader Joe's. |
Try the Jacobs Creek Reserve (not the ordinary variety) Should be available in the US at around US$11. Really excellent value. Shiraz, cabinet sauvignon and merlot available, I think, but I go for the shiraz.

If you like Spanish wines, I've been impressed by Arva Vitis Temperanillo $11-12.
Aquinas also makes a surprisingly good Cabernet. They're a spinoff of Sebastiani, and I believe under $10. |

Jacobs creek Merlot & Cab around $8 is good too. Both are available cheaper at Sams club but pretty close at the local wine store. |
I really like Vina Santa Rita Reserva from Chile's Maipo Valley, especially the merlot, but also the cab. About US$12 at Total Wine. Spend the extra couple bucks for the reserva & pass on the regular bottling.
The Concha y Toro "Diablo" line from Chile's Rapel Valley is about $8 everywhere. Try the Carmenere along with the cab & merlot. From southwest France, Chateau d'Oupia, from the Minervois region. I got a bottle as a gift and liked it so much I bought a case at A Southern Season (a local huge food & wine specialty shop) for 8.50/btl with their 15% case discount. Especially when you're shopping for bargains, consider the case discount once you find something you like. Some shops even give the discount for a mixed case of 12. |

Henry's Drive Pillar Box Red Padthaway.
It's a Cab/Shiraz/Merlot blend from Oz. Deadly great! ^ $8.99. |
Liberty School Cab is my favorite everyday red
might be slightly higher than $12 but certainly worth the extra dollar or so |
I've been enjoying Folie a Deux's "Menage a Trois". I find it at Sam's Club or Cost Plus World Market for $8 or $9 bucks.

You sometimes can still find a Henery of Pelham Baco Noir for $12, at most $16. Best value I have ever experienced.
