Red Robin Burgers - want a fried egg on that?
Tried a Red Robin burger the other day.
I asked the waiter which burger was the one that Red Robin is known for, "this one" he said and pointed to the following burger on the menu: "The Royal Red Robin Burger" which is: a burger with with three strips of hickory maple-smoked bacon, American Cheese, lettuce (iceberg) tomato and mayo on a sesame bun BUT also on top of the burger patty is a fried egg. A nice offer by the waiter was if I wanted my burger with any pink inside. Heck yes, I'm tired of gray overcooked pucks !!! Burger was ok, not great and I really didn't taste why an egg would make the burger better  Fries are ok and one can get "refills" http://www.redrobin.com/flash.html -- -- |
I've been to Red Robin's twice, and I have to say I think they're on the lower of the scale when it comes to sit down chains...
To be honest, I think only Outback is pretty good for chain going fare... |
I have been hitting RR once a month. It is convenient to a hotel where I stay and I enjoy watching sports at the bar and getting a meal with my beer while children scream and run all around the place. All the chaos makes me feel at home. But, the food is sub-par. I haven't had a burger yet, but the chicken is overspiced and I could care less for all you can eat steak fries. I guess I just like the beer and noise. Maybe I'll try the egg without the burger.

In college the burger with egg was known as a "one eyed bacon cheeseburger" at one joint, and a "Gusburger" at another favorite. This was in Charlottesville in the late 70's early 80's.
RR doesn't really WOW me, but like another poster, when I'm on the road and want a beer and app it's adequate. |
I had a similar burger at On the Rocks in Redondo Beach. Tasted good.
Is there a Red Robin in Chicago? |
I dunno, maybe I'm easy to please on this one, but I like Red Robin okay. I don't think it's a fantastic burger as in the burger itself, but I like the concoctions of crap they've come up with to put on it. The Royal is a pretty good heart attack on a bun (burger, bacon, egg). ;) Yeah, the only do two done methods, which are "some pink" or "no pink". In my experience, no pink still results in a little pink, so they don't really overcook it.
There do tend to be plenty of kids, perhaps moreso on the nights that someone appears in the bird costume. It's the sort of place where kids can feel at home and enjoy *and* parents can get a beer/drink and have a choice of food. I guess in this way it's a kind of compromise. There are too many different things on the menu for it to be particularly good at doing just one. But it's okay in my opinion, not great, just okay. There's one convenient to us, and the service has been good. And they'll make all the burger concoctions with your choice of veggie patty (Gardenburger or Boca), which appeals to my GF at least, if not to burger aficionados. ;) Finding somewhere okay to eat at reasonable cost where we both can get something is hard enough around here (lots of crap), maybe that's why I have a more positive view of it. |
I don't care for the burgers there. They do have a decent chicken caesar wrap and tortilla soup, tho.

Back in college, the campus dining hall called these "Boburgers".

I have seen a few diner type joints that also offer an egg on your burger but as far as chains go the only one's I know of are RR and Fatburger. The RR here in Calgary closed down about 2 years ago and I don't think it's really missed, offering average to less than average food.

Located mostly on the west coast, Carl's Jr. hamburgers has a Breakfast Burger with a fried egg, hamburger patty, hash browns, cheese, and ketchup. Pretty decent when fresh.

Is there a Red Robin in Chicago? Algonquin on Randall Road. Its about ten minutes from my house. Haven't been. I stopped in at one on So-Cal a few years ago....between the bright lights (at least at that location), surly waitstaff, and boring-looking menu, I was unimpressed. I left without ordering anything and haven't found any reason to go back. I think there's another Red Robin in Elgin as well....also on Randall. As for the burger you describe, I've seen that one in several "incarnations". Its called the "Big Ben Burger" at the Audley...a pub near the American Embassy in London. My daughter's (british) Boyfriend loves 'em. |
Red Robin is "known" for their onion rings. I remain steadfastly underwhelmed by them. Frankly, I prefer Chilis for dinner.

I swear that this Phillipine Chain that has a few outlets on the west coast called Jollibee has the same sort of burger. I could but wrong - their food is so bad here (but I heard it's awesome in Manila) that i avoid it at all costs.
