Around here, I sure don't mind being around the soccer moms! :p

There's a local chain called Diedrich Coffee I like to frequent. It's a bit cheaper than SB, but serve the same type of coffee drinks. There are no Dunkin Donuts around me unfortunately.

Another vote for Tim Horton's. Sadly I-75 doesn't run through the bay area--that seems to be the strip of the US that has them.

I love me some DD coffee and a jelly filled donut to kickoff the day.

Since we don't have any DDs in LA, I go with Coffee Bean and Peet's before I even consider Fourbucks.

I have a real issue with the comparison that most people are making here. Comparing DD/TH/etc drip coffee to Starbucks drip isn't a valid comparison. Anyone who has a clue about coffee wouldn't be drinking drip. They would be drinking Americano. The Starbucks variety of this would mop the floor with any of the other major chains. The only reason why people who drink so much DD think its great is that they don't know enough/aren't cultured enough to know what Americano is and thus order it. Of course, it isn't nearly as bad as the majority of people who go to Starbucks who order things like cappucino and latte in the afternoon. They're much worse. :cool:

Starbucks definately wins. I am not a big fan of doughnuts....

Starbucks. going up a nickle soon ....but can bring it on board again (as long as its from the airport concession)

I haven't tried a Timmies in the US yet but up here we'd gladly walk through a blizzard with howling wolves, wearing flip-flops and a tattered parka, our ears half gone from frostbite, just for a steaming cup of double-double (2 creams and 2 sugars for our American friends) and Timbits!

So to answer the original thread, Starbucks is okay but Timmies is manna from Heaven.

If you are in Portland or Seattle, gotta try coffee/espresso from "Coffee People".

They have some excellent dark roasts, and make a mean latte. One of my fav staples there, is called a "depth charge". Made from a tall cup of black tiger coffee, with 2 shots of black tiger espresso. That with some cream and raw suger, makes for a tasty morning treat.

I dont like coffee but i love starbucks chai latte and munchkins from Dunkin Donuts :)

If given a choice I still prefer Starbuck's over DD.

I totally agree. Americano (aka long black) all the way!
Try asking for a long black next time - to see if we can get that term into use.

So of the big franchises that are everywhere, are their long blacks consistent?

I'd bet that there is some skill involved and that it could be a matter of luck, regarding the barista/operator, the beans and the machine's condition make a difference. :)

(I'd go to the place with a lot of customers who know a good Amerciano / Long Black when they get it)
