There was a relatively recent issue of Gourmet magazine that was a Montreal special... can't remember any of the places off the top of my head, but the whole thing made me drool and want to go to Montreal. Any friends who subscribe who you might be able to borrow it from?

Lots of good restaurants in Montreal so you cannot go wrong. Two that stand out are Toque and Cube.

Except neither of these are in Old Montreal as requested by the OP, yes I know Cabs are cheap. My recommendation for Old Montreal would be Verses at the 4 Diamond Hotel Nelligan http://www.hotelnelligan.com/en/index.asp

I'll be traveling to Montreal next month and have made a reservation at Toque - any other recommendations? I'll be staying at the W.

Try the Beaver Club in the Queen Elizabeth Hotel or Le Caveau downtown (Country French).

I second that !Chef is ex cube before cube got to be more of a club than a resto.
There is a great place attached(via backdoor)to the springhill suites----Damned if I can remember the name-but it was very good.
Also Check out La Bruniose-not in old town but just delightful. One of the best meals I have ever had-without the hoiity toity of Toque!Or the pretentiousness of Le queue de Chaval.

Someone mentioned Rosalie, Renoir, and L'Epicier. Any experience/comments? Are they walking distance from the W?
Looking for something around CAD 35-40 per head excluding drinks.
Many thanks.

I had an excellent meal at L'Epicier a little over a year ago. If I recall correctly it fits your price range, but I can't comment on distance from the W.

There is a great (authentic) Mexican restaurant in Old Montreal that we always go to but I cant remember the name. Last time we were there it was Mexican Easter and so full of colorful decorations and people- it was great!

Could it be called Casa de Mateo?
Looks very interesting...though Mrs. Chop wants to try a more local/Quebec kind of fare.
Thanks!

I just remembered the name of the other place in Old Montreal where we had a delicious meal--Boris Bistro. If the weather's nice they have a large outdoor seating area too.
