cockroach in your eggroll at upscale Chinese restaurant, what would you do?

I went to a rather upscale(as in $$$) Chinese restaurant last night. There were six of us and we had a good time.

Until this happened...

A man and a woman sat in the table behind us. The man
said "honey, what do you think this is?"(pointing to his
half-eaten eggroll) Next came the screaming from the
woman... "IT"S A COCKROACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Everyone
in the restaurant turned and the waiter & manager came
running.

At first, I thought it was one of those people who wanted to
get out of paying... (sorry.. but I tend to be very skeptical
in situations like these)

However, with everyone staring, the manager cut open
the other two untouched eggrolls... sure enought another
well-done cockroach was found inside. It was one of those
small cockroachese, about half the size of a peanut.

Before the manager could say anything, the man and the
very upset woman got up and left the restaurant. The only
thing they had were the eggrolls, since the entrees had not
been served yet.

My friends and I looked at each other, not sure what to
think... well... at least we didn't order any eggrolls. I think
the manager saw the expression on our faces and kept
saying "this has never happened before... blah, blah, blah"
Without asking, he took 50% off our $320 check.(like I said
it was a $$$ Chinese restaurant) We left the restaurant
without saying anything to each other, but guess what was
in our minds? :(

As if that wasn't enough... I couldn't resist the urge to
check my local health department's website for info on this
restaurant. What's the old saying? Let sleeping dogs lie?
No, that's not it... more like somethings are better left
unknown...

According to the health dept, this restaurant has been
given several warnings in the past for roach infestations.
Last entry was in 01/2006, when the inspector reported
that the restaurant had contracted with an exterminator
and the infestation has been eliminated.... well, not 100%,
as it turns out. I'm thinking about calling about the
health dept and report last night's incident... then again,
I just want to completely forget about it... :(

There is probably more filth going on in "upscale" restaurants than at your local coffee shop. Guess you won't be returning to that restaurant.... :p

Hand made eggrolls, even in upscale resturants are very rare.

Most likely the eggrolls came from a food plant that had problems.

Which means none of us are safe

I do believe cockroaches are a delicatessan in China. Deep fried sauteed with veggies and deep fried in a roll,

...check the bill to make sure you didn't pay extra. *boom*crash*

I'm here all week, folks. Tip your waiters.

I sure did!

First, Welcome to Flyertalk southshoresbest!

...that's scary. More common then we'd think I bet ... but still scary nonetheless. I don't think I could eat after that experience!

What would I do? Probably vomit on the spot.

Just curious, what city was this in, btw?

Could you give us some hints about the name and location (need not be 100% details) of this place so that we won't dine there period?

PCheng May 2, 2006 7:15 pm

Call the health department. If this restaurant had been reprimanded before, and yet the problem keeps coming back, there can only be 2 possibilities. Either their food handling process is unhygenic, thus attracting roaches, or the building itself is so badly infested not even a exterminator can fix the problem.

C’mon, there are acceptable amounts of rat hair in peanut butter and there are many other food products that you consume that have items you would find not to your liking. More than likely the product came from a food plant where it was made as rebadc pointed out.

Also after having called on restaurants for many years, if you dine out at all you have been to restaurants that have poor food service practices, or filthy “back of houses”, how the front of the restaurant looks is NOT a way to tell how the back of the house operates.

exactly. Report the problem and if it is chronic, they will be shut down.

Mrs. Outoftown and I have a favorite Chinese restaurant in Raleigh, NC. It's called 1010 and next to a vetinerary clinic on Western Blvd. They had they health license yanked and reinstated several months later. Boy, we missed it when it was closed. When they reopened, they proudly displayed their new passing grade health certificate in their ads. Our regular hangout for Sunday lunch. We don't eat the eggrolls.

LOL- I've heard that alot and have used it too, but lately I've realized how wrong it really is. I mean, just think of the examples-Polio (ok-outdated but give me a break), Mumps, etc etc etc.

From a pragmatic stance, the cockroach was (presumably) cooked in pretty hot oil, which should have killed any pathogens it was carrying...
