Pancakes were small, overpriced, and not very good. And the place is too small. Maybe it would have been better had they not been so busy, but if I spend $25 for two on four pancakes and a cuppa joe each, I expect a little more for my money. Cooking pancakes isn't rocket science.

Best Pancakes in the USA? Definately the Buttermilk Pancakes made and served by me at my house.

The ORIGINAL Pancake House

All items made from scratch, high quality and a premium price, but well worth it.

I couldn't agree more !!!

For a chain restaurant, the "Country Griddle" pancakes at IHOP are pretty good - they have cream of wheat mixed into the batter. Sounds odd. I never woulda tried 'em if Ken Hoffman (the delightfully wacky writer for the Houston Chronicle) hadn't touted 'em so highly!

I always add the boysenberry syrup on top.

Honolulu's Eggs 'n Things - with all the wonderful and varied toppings (the fresh fruit and guava syrups made daily), Just thinking about that great little place and I'm ready to book a flight to HNL.

I've eaten at Pamela's, and at Dottie's True Blue. (In fact, I had the blueberry cornmeal pancakes that morning at Dottie's, and I remember them being good.) Fine breakfast choices, certainly. I can't really say if they've got the "best" pancakes. It's just not a common order for me. I'd probably more likely choose an omelette at most places. (If there's a house specialty, I might lean towards that. Otherwise, right now, I'm not in eating breakfast out mode at all.)

We have a branch of Original Pancake House in the area, but I've never eaten there.

Another vote for the ORIGINAL... I didn't even realize it was franchised until I checked out the website you posted and know nothing about the other locations.

We discovered it in Portland about 25 years ago while I was attending summer school in that lovely city. In fact I believe we saw one of the original owners (who has sinced passed away) in there more than once. It was well worth the 45-minute wait some Sunday mornings and we gradually ate our way through the menu. We've returned there every few years when traveling in or through Portland and the quality remains high AFAIK.

I third that. Used to go to the Orig PH when I lived in Scottsdale and always enjoyed it.

Also, I will add one more (that is a lot better than PJ's). For those in the San Fernando Valley, there's a place in San Fernando called Pancake Heaven. Good stuff. Been around forever and a day.

I will also vote for the Original. Often eat it when I am in South Denver.

Oh my yes. I remember it from its old location (before it was razed/moved for the freeway extension).

A little further away, the macademia nut pancakes at The Big Island Grill in Kona on the Big Island are very, very ono.

Many Four Seasons properties in North America serve lemon ricotta pancakes. Light as air, the tartness pairs well with the richness coming from the cheese. The tartness is also contrasts well with the maple syrup. Accompany with bacon for a heavenly breakfast after a restful night's sleep in their truly heavenly beds.

The BEST sourdough pancakes are at Zachary's in Santa Cruz, CA!

Many people would say that the best of the Original chain is in Wilmette, Illinois, better known as Walker Brothers. This place has been in business since the '60s and consistently is #1 for pancakes and breakfasts in general in the Chicago area.

Certainly the biggest pancakes I've ever seen (bigger than the plate). If any celebs eat there often, they will soon be obese. Very good, but its being in the top 10 is pure hype. Don't like the French Press coffee.

Neither did I ... and I'm a native PDXer. Even more reprobate, I've never been there. I thought it was just some kitschy local thing. oops.

I never order pancakes for breakfast, I always order an omelette or full English breakfast.... I'd have to say the potato pancakes I make are delicious but are best at dinnertime. My chocolate chip pancakes are yummy as well. Since I do not have a place to mention it is easy to say the best pancakes are NOT at IHOP... ick :td:

Original Pancake House

The original Original Pancake House is, I believe, the location in Anaheim, California. If I am not mistaken it was started by two retired lady school teachers and then franchised after their success.

The Anaheim location still is going strong. I have gone there for the past 35 years and love the Apple Pancake, which I split with my wife for great breakfast. I don't think one person could consume an entire pancake alone.

Let me be among the first, if not the first, to welcome a pancake lover to FT.

Having said that, I must quote from the site:

http://www.originalpancakehouse.com/

"The Original Pancake House was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1953 by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke..."

I could say, what is it about you Southern Californians, but I'm far too nice...

And I speak as somebody old enough to have witnessed the founding of an early Southern California chain in Santa Barbara, Uncle John's Pancake House. ;)

Cheers,
Fredd

Yes. Nashville ministers whose sermons have run too long have been killed by angry mobs of churchgoers eager for Pancake Pantry.

It's been probably 8 years since I've been to Monterey, but there was an out-of-this-world breakfast/lunch restaurant a block or two up from the bay that had wonderful fruit and wheat germ pancakes...the "blueberry germ" were my favorite. Once upon a time it was called "First Watch," but they had changed their name and I can't remember what it's called now (if it still exists)--perhaps First Awakenings?. Does anyone know which place I'm talking about?

Shopsins in NYC should be on the list.

Where else can you get Macaroni and Cheese pancakes that actually taste incredible? And oh my...how about the Slutty Cakes. Nothing like them IMO :)

The menu needs to be seen to be believed (pancakes & major pancakes can be found on the thrid page)...

No wonder I've never been there--just looking at the menu leaves me paralyzed with indecision! ;)

Actually, O'Rourke's Diner in Middletown, Ct has a pretty amazing brunch menu, too--something like 8 pages, half of the items named after regulars, etc. The combinations aren't quite as weird, though. Can't comment on their pancakes, however, as I am not much of a pancake eater.

NWA_via_MSP Apr 25, 2006 5:37 pm

Denny's - any of their 784 locations... as long as you don't get assaulted or shot.

iahphx Apr 26, 2006 12:34 pm

A must for any pancake lover is the restaurant at the DeLeon Springs State Park in Florida, north of Orlando. They give you the batter (various kinds) and you make them yourself at your table. Truly excellent pancakes.

Of all places, I also remember Alaska in general having very good sourdough pancakes. It seemed like many of the breakfast restaurants competed on their pancakes, with claims like using ancient "starter" and such. At the moment, I can't remember my favorite, but I don't think I've ever had a bad plate of sourdough pancakes in Alaska.

Calcifer and others,
The link below is to what might be the most hearfelt piece of writing about a restuarant I have read. It's from the New Yorker about Shopsin's. If you love food in general, pancakes in particular and writing then I recommend you check this article out & check the restuarant out.

No list of "best pancakes in the USA" can be complete without including at least one Hawaiian restaurant serving macademia nut pancakes with lilikoi (passionfruit) syrup

The Gazebo Restaurant at the Outrigger Napili Shores on Maui
Boots & Kimo's in Kailua (Oahu)
-Ono grindz dat brok' da mouf Brah!!! :D

Now for buttermilk pancakes, I've gotta put in a plug for a Berkeley, CA classic--Bette's Diner
