---without a doubt---Dottie's in SF :)
,,,for me, it's always been Dottie's True Blue Cafe in SF...hmmmmm :)
|
I *do* enjoy the Original Pancake House's german pancake, but I have tasted six or so other varieties and found them all to be average.
First Awakenings in Monterey....now THAT's yummy! They were featured on Rachael Ray's $40 a Day show, I believe. Great waffles too. I dig the blueberry germ pancakes at Stacks in the Bay Area...those flapjacks are HUGE! One covers a dinner size plate! |

Another vote for the original pancake house. I adore their 49er flapjacks. Yum!

The Anaheim location still is going strong. I have gone there for the past 35 years and love the Apple Pancake, which I split with my wife for great breakfast. I don't think one person could consume an entire pancake alone. |
I haven't been to LA for some years now.
Is Du Pars in Studio City still the place to go for pancakes ? |
The best buttermilk pancakes could be found in Hillsboro, Oregon:
Hales Restaurant |
Pancakes in US
Black Bear Diner with locations throughout California and Nevada.

Dottie's True Blue SFO is Closed on Tuesdays
After reading this thread I headed to Dottie's this morning.
A hand-written sign on the door indicated that it's closed on Tuesdays. I look forward to trying the blueberry pancakes tomorrow morning. |

We have one nearby in Plano - it's PACKED on Sunday morning's (our usual Pancake day, when we're in the mood for Carbs). Best bet is to get there around 9am - before the crowds get there. After 11am - it's usually a good 45-60 min wait for a table. And the BEST pancake, if I recall correctly - is the one baked in the oven and lathered in butter... (mmmm)... Had to google the site and get the description: The pancake is called the "Oven baked". It's served with whipped butter, lemon and powdered sugar. I can just feel my sugar levels rise thinking about it! |

Well, I'm not one to brag but my lemon ricotta pancakes with fresh raspberries kick butt. :)
|
Made this brand of macadamia nut pancakes while camping a few weekends back. Unbelieveably wonderful start to a day of hiking!

The previously mentioned "make your own" pancakes in DeLeon Springs is on my short list of places to hit, but I have not yet. My favorite (sort of) local place is Breakfast Club in Orlando (Magnolia and Pine, I think). They have incredible banana crunch pancakes, and are quite reasonably priced. My favorite place - ever - is Grove Cafe in Ames, IA. I can only say that the picture on this thread does not do the Grove pancake justice. |
Easy.
Souffle Pancakes (with hint of lemon) Cooked by head chef @ Tarragon @ Elk Mountain Resort near MTJ/TEX. Unbelievably good and unbelievably filling. ^^ |
Is "The Castle" in MB still around?

Oh wait, pancakes -- Another vote for the Original (on PCH in Redondo) OT - OK, no pancakes at The Castle, but when I started eating weekend "Eggs Benedict and homefries with onions and peppers" there, it was $2.00 - and they were GREAT!...I remember nearly freaking out when they upped the price to $2.50! |
Walker Brothers Pancake House
I'd have to put in my two cents and say Walker Bros. Pancake House in Wilmette, Glencoe and a couple of other Chicago locations. On the weekends, it is difficult to get in. I always remember seeing BJ Armstrong, Scottie Pippen and other Bulls there during the hayday of the Bulls. The other nice aspect of Walker Brothers is that in addition to having great pancakes (Apple Pancakes ala mode is to die for), the ambience is great too. It is beautifully done in light oak woodwork and furnishings.
|
much as i'd hate to see it anymore crowded than it already gets, my vote for PHX is definitely Matt's Big Breakfast - seriously tasty griddlecakes.
|
Many people would say that the best of the Original chain is in Wilmette, Illinois, better known as Walker Brothers. This place has been in business since the '60s and consistently is #1 for pancakes and breakfasts in general in the Chicago area. But if you go, you HAVE to get one of the signature special dishes: the baked Apple Pancake, the Dutch Baby, or (my favorite) 49'er Flapjacks (thin, chewy sourdough crepes). The 49'ers are, IMHO, the best pancakes in the world. Oh, this thread has ruined my resolve...I need some pancakes! |

I'll vote for Becky's Diner in Portland, ME. Analise told us about it when went up last year on DL's free fare. Best pancakes and breakfast I've ever had.
It's kind of a hole in the wall place, and the wait was up nearly 2 hours on a Saturday AM, but it was SO worth it. |
Best blueberry pancakes I've ever had were at The Pitcher Inn, in Warren, Vermont. Note, however, that while the restaurant is open to the public for dinner, breakfast is available only to those who pony of the $350+ for a room for the night.
|
Best pancakes are the ones I make with about 50% mixed blue, logan and blackberries (berries come frozen from Costco-fry pancakew with berries frozen on non-stick grill with some butter, serve with real maple syrup). Don't forget the fresh Peet's coffee.
But, if you want to go commercial, Walker Brothers', as mentioned above is the absolute best. Coffee served with whipping cream, wonderful, old Chicago ambiance--old stained glass windows from demolished buildings--and those amazing apple pancakes, originally invented in German to serve as a hearty meal during lent. I go everytime I am in Chicago. |
I love PJ's in Princeton. It was burned down in the late 90's (I think it was early 1997). I recall driving through Princeton and seeing the fire trucks: sad. They rebuilt the place and preserved one, scorched booth as a memento.
|
The chocolate chip pancakes with whipped cream at the Original Pancake House in Las Vegas are THE BEST !!!!!!
|
The Lemon Pancakes at Rennaisance hotels are nice.
I know were talking pancakes, but I have to give props to Marriott's Crunchy French Toast. |
My vote goes to the Tasty Crust restaurant on Mill St. in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii. They only do buttermilks, but the things are plate-size and just melt in your mouth (you do get maple syrup and butter with them). If memory serves it's $3.50 for 2 and it's enough food to fill you up. Very popular with locals and looks frozen in time on decor (a good sign).
If you're on Maui you definitely have to check it out. |
I would like to add Pipes Cafe in Encinitas, CA. Great cakes that are huge.
|
Looking for pancakes on the east coast?
These are great all great suggestions - if you live in Chicago or the west coast.
Does anyone know where to get great pancakes in mundane states like Virginia, Pennsylvania or Maryland?::confused: |
I know this is a US thread, but I gotta throw out for crepes at Chez Cora in Canada. Another FT told me about them and I hit one when I went to Montreal. EXCELLENT fruit filled crepes. ^
I live in MD and grew up in PA ... can't say I ever found a good pancake place. Pretty much stuck with Denny's/IHOP. I hear Waffle Houses are good for belgian waffles though. |
The baked Apple Pancake at the Atrium Pancake Restaurant in Gatlinburg Tennessee. Mmmmmmmmm
|
A fourth vote for Pancake Pantry in Music City.
