BYO in Montreal
Going there this weekend for a short trip and I generally like BYOs as the focus must therefore be on the food. I have had great experiences in Philly, and I was hoping for a recommendation for Montreal. Any help would be appreciated

There are many AVV (BYO) restaurants in Montreal - I was particularly
impressed by O Thym, on Maisonneuve in a slightly rundown part of
town (even though I didn't realize it was AVV and wasn't handy to a
boozeria so had to deal with its large selection of waters), and also had
a pretty good meal at Restaurant l'Academie, on St. Denis, which has
the advantage of being next door to a state store.
I would, however, dispute your implication that food is less than the
focus of a restaurant with a list. For me, the quality of the list more
often than not mirrors the quality of the menu. Both of the places I
mention above I chose in spite of their being AVV rather than because.

I agree with your notion that a strong list can match a strong menu. What I really meant to say I guess, is that often times (in NYC at least) I feel that the bar and the restaurant scene can become more important than the food and service where as at a BYO, the food needs to be good because there is no bar. Do not get me wrong though, I love a place that has good food and a great selection of wines. Thank you for your suggestions!

It's probably a question of what's putting the bucks into the
restaurateur's pocket, rather than a philosophically-based
choice. I'd suspect, given the vast profusion of AVVs, that
it may be expensive to get a license in Montreal.
